China Agents (Newland & Caravan Cafe)
Hi guys,
Just tried contacting Caravan Cafe. No answer for weeks – a friend of mine who traveled through Kashgar recently told me they were closed by the local authorities. All business was diverted to Newland Travel.
So I tried newlandtravel.net and only found Chinese writing (which I can't read), but no contact details or whatsoever.
Has anyone got any information on what's going on? Is Newland closed as well now? Has anyone got links to a reliable operator in Kashgar? I'd like to organise a 5-day trip through China to connect the Stans with the Karakorum Highway.
Cheers
Bjorn

Thanks Redboots,
Who is Taher? Was he associated with Newland Travel, or maybe Caravan Cafe?
I'm a bit nervous about my travel plans – Newland & Caravan had a good reputation which they probably wanted to keep up. Any new & unproven agents might not be that reliable, and I don't want to pay months in advance & turn up on the border just to find there's no guide...
Southern Pakistan & Baluchistan (the alternative of going through the Stans & China) – I'm not too keen on that, given the current situation in Pakistan. My workmate is from Kashmir/Pakistan. He reckons KKH & Islamabad are fine, but not the South.
Cheers

I think Taher is 100% solid. He IS New Land Travel. Another guy used him in 2006, (I think), name of Roel Hendrickx. You can find Roel on HU if you want another opinion, BUT, he traveled FROM China after he bought a combination there.
Caravan Cafe is defunked.

I had a mail from Taher today and he was very apologetic about taking three days to reply to my previous mail. Personally I reckon three days is excellent.
Mind you the quote was eye-watering, I'm now working on what I can cut out.

China Agent
Hello,
I crossed from Ikesham Pass (Kyrg) to the Kunjarab Pass (Pak) and used a chap called Wayne - ex Caravan Cafe. I would recommend him strongly, we were met at the border, all paperwork was done and he speaks good English.
He charged $US1200 to complete all formalities. He can be contacted at xistinfo@yahoo.com.cn or 0086 13659930259.
Please contact me if you have any problems.
Nick

Caravan Cafe...lives on
Hi. Steve here. I used to be at the Caravan Cafe in Kashgar. Some of my old correspondence is still on the HUBB. I took a break to see my kids off to university. Now, I'm back and work for Crown Inn, a newly opened hotel in Tashkorgan and with an office in Kashgar. If you need up-to-date info, you can reach me at: steve@crowninntashkorgan.com .

I contacted Diethelm Travel (Beijing, Kunming) via recommendations in the forum re a trip from Yunnan thru Tibet, Sinkiang and Inner Mongolia in 2010 and so far they seem responsive/responsible. No $$ has changed hands.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
