Oil Availability Novosibirsk/Ulaan Batur
Ill be due for an oil change around Novosibirsk. What are the chances of finding a Shell Helix 20-50 or other name brand in Novosibirsk or the smaller towns around there?
I could defer to Ulaan Batur as well, if necessary.

I don't know about Shell Helix specifically, but you can find many types of name brand oil at car shops in Ulaanbaatar. Not motorcycle-specific oil, but name brand car oil is readily available. Sometimes bike oil is also available, but it comes and goes so you cannot be sure of it.

NBS Motor in Novosibirsk seems to be highly recommended.

I got some decent (car) oil at an Japanese car dealer in UB. And they let me use their power wash to get the Mongolian mud off my bike. But, if you want oil specifically made for motorcycles, I would say Novosibirsk is a better bet.

I thought it was nbc motor? They do have a great range of oils etc but you cannot get an oil filter for a Ducati engine anywhere in town....

Don`t use Shell in Russia!!!
It`s not Shell. It`s donkey urine made in russia. Try to find a little known in russia oil like Agip, Elf, etc. Don`t buy Shell, Esso, Mobil oil in Russia. It will be counterfeit for the most part. It`s not an advertising, It`s an advice.

Thanks for the replies. Riding a BMW K75, I can take standard automotive oil of any kind. I changed in Bishkek with TOTAL and can run past Vlad if necessary.
I think I will try UB as an oil change place, BUT I'm curious who supplied their local dealers their oil? Is it the same suppliers that Alex was speaking of?

The UB car dealers get name brand oil from both Russia and China. It will be easy to tell which is which. If the label has only Cyrillic (and/or English) then it is from Russia. If it has Chinese characters on it then it came from the south.

In Mongolia, I got a Korean brand (LG, I think) oil at an import car dealer. They put it in new Toyotas so I figured it would be OK (it was). If my memory is correct, there is a large auto dealer on the main road in UB near the train station. One of the guys there spoke English. The owner graduated from Tokyo University, so I assume he spoke some English (we spoke in Japanese, so I don't know).
They wanted to do the work themelves, so I stood there and told them what to do. I convinced them to let me put the bolts back in myself. Didn't want them over/under-tightening them or stripping the threads!

20-50 Availability
Well, I'm in UB now and having a hard time finding mineral 20-50 of any brand. Hoping Russia will have it.
Theres a new bike shop in Barnaul...Yamaha place and you get get pretty much all the oil you'd find in Novosibirsk in Barnaul...synthetic and mineral.
