The best place to stay in Aswan

With-out a doubt we have found the best spot to stay for Overlanders heading south to Wadi Hafi from Aswan. A cheap clean safe appartment with all facilities including safe storage for motorbikes, and 24hr security for vehicles in a quite Nuweiban village 4 klms from the center of town, with Internet,
Usd 10.00 per person per night with hot shower, and kitchen view of Nile from private garden balcony with 180 degree views set in a cliff-top breakfast dinner BBQ setting, WOW we got lucky meeting Galal Hamed who is a great guy and wants us to have the best time everyday.|(no camping by side of road anymore in Aswan) You can also pitch you tent on grass,,,,,,, yes grass!!!!!! and make your own deal with Galal. Galal arranged our Sudanese visas, booked our ferry spot , and barge for Victor our buggy and will be there for us when leaving ,,,,,,plus no extra charges ,,,,,,makes the dreaded ferry easy,,,,,yes we know about the road and getting saftey travel permits from Cario's secret police been there done that.
We hope all Ovelander contacts Galal he is just what we needed after 3 weeks in the desert,

I camp there for 4dayswating for my bike to come from Sudan,nice,quiet and free,just aprox.750meters from Port authority and Customs.High Dam is nice small town,people are very friendly.

After 3 weeks in the desert you sometimes need a good place to stay and wash yourself and clothes..... so thanks for your tip,but Noor House was a great place to stay with hot water and internet and secure parking .......

Sam and I have been staying with Galal the past week and can vouch for what elayne and Chris say... This is an awesome place and Galal is just fantastic, unbelievably fantastic and go set and genuine and so so kind and helpful! Will post more in future with pics and more details!! A big definite, especially if you would like an truly honest person who can help with the politics of the ferry and the road!

Very nice! We were stuck in Aswan for about 4 weeks trying to obtain Sudanese visas this past summer (We are Americans, so...yeah) ha ha.

We ended up meeting a guy named Gasser Anwar via couchsurfing and through him we ended up renting a house from his cousin for the duration of our time there. It was on Elephantine Island (on the backside) and was quiet, had AC, hot showers, kitchen, etc. There were five of us there originally and then two of our friends joined us. We paid 250 Euro for the first week and then 150 Euro each week for the next 3 weeks. So that boils down to about $9/night/person for the first week and $4/night/person the last three weeks.

It seemed as though there were a decent number of houses for rent on the island. The upside was that they were all clean, cheap, QUIET, had AC, and had wonderful views of the river and the desert. The downsides were that you had to take a ferry to get there (either the free Movenpick ferry to the hotel and then walk around back to enter the village or haggle with the locals every damn time you want to go home). Also, vehicle parking is an issue, but we left our cars with another cousin of Gassers and there were no issues with that or money expected which was a nice change.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Aswan, but having that house was a saving grace. The price was right and even the most stressful day was made better sitting on the back porch sipping on a drink watching the felucas go by.
