Hi Chris, we used a 20' container on the way back from Egypt to Italy last january (Vado Ligure port next to Savona).
The cost was:
Container 390 USD
Egyptian formalities 1700 Egypt Pound
Unload in Italy was more expensive, about 500 Euro for all.

So the total cost was 1030 Euro (530 Euro in Egypt + 500 Euro in Italy).

We used IBA company in Egypt, it's based in Cairo and Alex port.

Contact in Cairo: Mr. Ragui Aziz 02 2907337 ragui.aziz@iba.com.eg

Contact in Alex: Mr. Michel Diab 03 3927706 michel.diab@iba.com.eg

The overland way to Egypt was split as follow:

- After ferry first night stop in Kairouan TN
- 2nd night in Zliten LY
- 3rd night 200 km before Tobruk LY
- morning Egyptian custom
- 4th night in Siwa EG

ciao
Luciano

If you have the time to do it I would recommend travelling overland to Egypt, it really is fantastic.
Can you tell me what ferry/ship was there from Greece to Haifa ? I am looking for a connection like that.

Vehicle in container?

Hi Luciano,
I plan to move to Egypt with a car.
Do you think it is possible to us a container for this?
And also, did you have problems with the Egyp when landing a vehicle in Egypt?
Thanks in advance,
Lutz

If you plan to move to Egypt then I presume you will want to import your car rather than use a Carnet. Be aware that you can't just bring any car to Egypt on a permanent basis.
I could be wrong but I tend to think it has to be less than a year old.

Haven't been checking any new threads regarding this topic, but just in order to update (a bit late, though) this topic I presume you all have been informed of the Venice - Lathakia - Alexandria - Venice ferry, correct?

Cool

I'm writing this in Istanbul. The only people who seem to be doing any ferries into Egypt are a company called Sisa Shipping Lines, Sisa Shipping Lines - Sisa Shipping Lines

They are sailing from Iskenderun, Turkey to Damietta, Egypt every Wednesday and Saturday. We paid $850 USD for a 110 Defender and three seats.

Contact: Saba Ipek, Assistant General Manager,
E-Mail: saba.ipek@sisashipping.com
Phone +90 216 444 2954
Office: Degirmen Sok No:18 Kat:18
Nida Kule is Merkezi
Kozyatagi - Kadikoy
Istanbul

He has perfect english and lived in London for 22 years.

Sisa also have offices in Brussels, Vienna, and London.

Have a look at our website Cornwall to Cape Town | An adventure from the country of Kernow to the southern tip of Africa… for more information.

Alternatives for getting into Africa:

- Ferries to Tunisia, Algeria etc: as far as we know the western Libyan - Algerian border is closed to Westerners, not known when it opens again. We wouldn't advise going through Mali, Niger or Chad.

- Middle East: Syria is not an option, going through northern Iraq may be feasible but highly risky.

- Western Africa: Possible, but concerns RE Congo, DRC and Angola. Expect lots of mud in Congo!

I hope this helps.

Just a note Sisa Shipping can do an inteternational transfer via the bank for payment. They have a bank account in the UK so if you are British you can pay in GBPounds on a normal bank transfer in the UK. Ask it will save the conversion and bank charges. It is a good company and they will send you an Eticket.
As they now go into Damietta not Port Said and the advice on Fixers has changed so you need to ask when you arive in Egypt. Allow 4 days to get through and note Egypt stamps your carni for one month!! The same as your visa.
Have a great trip.
Fuel is a problem at the moment. If you are in difficulty ask the army or tourest police who have been able to help us without the long wait.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
