Visa at Mauritanian border

Good news for Africa-travellers living far from Mauritanian embassy. Since yesterday its possible again to get you're visa at the border. It will cost you only €20 euro for a 72 hours stay in the country. Enough for most travelers driving through to Senegal. If you want to stay longer you can prolong it at the police offices in Nouadhibou or Nouakchott. Probably also in Rosso, Kiffa or any other major city in the country. This will cost you another €40. But nevertheless its cheaper than for instance in Brussels where you have to pay €93,75 for a one entry visit and have to present a lot of documents. Although my multiple entree came with a one year period in wich I can visit the country up to 180 days.

and i should add than a french biker on a F800GSA got the mauritanian visa at the border between Morocco and Mauritania, it seems to be possible again but for how long ?

you can get insurance in marocco , at the "crossroad" 40km before Dakhla, or in Nouadhibou, should be 10€ for 15 days
(insurance for senegal in nouakchot 10€ for 1 month)

Just a small thought...
Visas, whether full or transit at the border, is good news, they do a little habit of changing their minds often.
If coming from the North and passing Rabat, consider getting it there. It's a loooong way back up and down again if it changes...again!

Well the border post have grown 'impressively' since .... remember those wooden shacks?
I was told the reason they suddenly (overnight) stopped issuing visas at the border some years ago was rampant corruption. Still a little Mad Max feeling lingering over the place, but is better organized now.

I'm still in Morocco, Sidi infi, and I hear horror stories about corruption at the Rosso border. People her on the camping has been refused because they didn't want to pay a bribe of €500. Would you like to keep us informed about your experiences??

People who keep coughing up these crazy amounts of money to cross a border....€500 Euros?? Why?

Rosso is full of crooks, absolute a** holes, but there is no way anybody should be handing over that kind of money. You need to be firm but polite, don't let them intimidate you, stand your ground. The moment they sense fear your wallet will be empty before you even get onto the ferry.

Sure, you may pay too much for insurance, sure you may be overcharged for the ferry, sure there might be an imaginary tax of some sort, but these 'bribes' should all be in the region of 1,000 Ougiya or so.

Diama is much easier, but if you do not have a Senegal visa you will need to go via Rosso for the time being as Diama is not issuing visas (unless that has changed in the last few weeks?)

Is the insurance "office" at the roundabout where you turn down to the peninsular to Dakhla?
