Where to buy 1 months insurance in Peru - revealed.
My dear departed dad always said never take no for an answer, and that there is no such word as can't.
After 3 days without seeing any where to try and buy insurance, we stopped at Piura before heading across the desert.
And found lots of SOAT offices.
We entered one, La Positiva, and started to ask about insurance, waited to be offered a year and then asked for 1 month because we only had temporary import docs for the bikes.
We showed our temporary import doc and she got on the phone to ask some questions. And said that "yes, you do it, but not here, in our other office a few streets away". he then found someone to guide us there.
All was done in about 10 minutes, both bikes.
The price ? S97. Yes, about 35USD.
Details of where to go
La Positiva
544 Lima
Piura
It is just North of the Plaza Des Armes (where there is also a helpful tourist info office)
La Positiva Seguros
As Piura is probably the 1st major town people come across if heading south from the mountains, this could be a useful stop.
FWI, the coast route does not seem to have any police hassles/stops.

Nice. I asked in both of these offices just 13 months ago and was told only full year insurance was possible. Things are improving.

I'm starting to believe that having my wife with me helps loads, she distracts the p0lice and makes admin people more attentive when asking awkward questions :-)

You'll have to buy her a new bike :-)
It worked again today, we were stopped at 0915, they nly asked 2 questions.
Where are you going ?
Can we take photographs ?
They then posed with us and made sure we were taking the "safe" road to Chiccayo.

Thanks so much for the info... I'm in Ecuador now but plan to cross into Peru in the next week or so. I will definitely be looking for that office.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
