"Lending" my bike to my brother in South America

I wanted to pass this off and see what you think....

I am riding solo to South America and originally planned on shipping my bike back to the USA when my money runs out. An idea that I just thought about was to have my brother fly down to SA and take the bike off my hands and he would ride it back to the states and I would fly. Thus saving me money on shipping and he would get a "free" bike to use to get back home.

My question is, if the bike is only in my name, should just see about adding his name to my Title and Registeration now or is there a way that I could "sell" him the bike? If so, whats the best country in SA (on the pacific side or Argentina) to "give" the bike to a fellow traveler(i.e my brother)?

Any other tips or ideas to make this happen is greatly appreciated

You can, depending on the country, visit a notario and have a "carta poder" drawn up, (cost: about $10)which will transfer all rights and responsibilities in connection with the vehicle. All that remains to be done is cross the border together. Uruguay's a good place.

If you have a Carnet de Passage , then you don´t have to do anything apart from get a ¨letter of authority¨drawn up. You can do this yourself with your name and signiture on it, get several copies made and get a Spannish translation and copies done. I`ve been driving overland trucks all over SA for years and we don´t stay with the same truck for long. I don´t know if the same applies with any other temp import doc but I´d have thought so.]

Like the others said, just get a notarized letter written up that gives your brother permission to possess your motorcycle, and whatever level of authority you want to give him (what countries to take it, etc.).

My motorcycle is registered in my wife's name in Canada, I have ridden it in over 20 countries in Europe in the last 5 years, never had a problem. I have a notarized letter that grants me permission to have it, to import and export it, and so forth. I think I've only shown the letter to two people in 5 years. Most of the people who want to look at the 'paperwork' are only concerned that the licence plate is valid, and that the insurance is valid. The vehicle itself could be registered to Mickey Mouse and they would not care, as long as everything is in order.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
