This post is about tyres avaliable in Nairobi, kenya. just reread it and saw it made no sense!
Tyres are avaliable from Ian Duncan MT21 cost 150Euro for a rear all basically same price I instead went for a great looking MT21 look-alike from Down Town made by Vee-Rubber for 77euro.
It has all the same specifications as the genuine MT21. How ever I have been regreating it ever scince. The side walls are not strong enought to take the weight of a overlander (I have TTR600, not that heavly loaded) The tyre produces terriable weaving and the most unstabe/scary/dangerous ride I have ever had. I have found only a pressure of 40psi will keep it from 'roling' all the time. These pressures off road make it skate about even worse than on Tar. Having said that the bike unloaded is not a problem. I am now looking to replace it first chance I get (hopefuly Zambia).
I can only recomend that others bite the bullet and fork out the cash for a genuine brand, from all the searching I did only avaliable from Ian Ducan at the KTM shop. or if you really want a vee-rubber and can last to Dar es salam they are MUCH cheeper there, see Hussain at TUK TUK +255 (0)71323707 is his mob number, very usefull guy if you need any help in Dar es Salam

Bummer George, and you were so excited when you picked up the tire in downtown Nairobi...

Is Tuk Tuk the place just off Morogoro Road, beside the hospital/clinic and a few blocks up from the road that runs by the waterfront? If so, they did seem to have a few odds and ends and claimed to have helped a few foreigners out.

Hey Tom, yer I was so happy when I found that tyre, but as they say; you can't judge a book by its cover, or a tyre from China.
Down in Lusaka now...looking for a new tyre as it happens!

When I was in Lusaka there was a mx-competition with loads of KTMs. I guess that means that there is a KTM-shop somewhere.

If everything fails you can get some in Windhoek.

I found my way out to the KTM shop yesterday, only had 18-110-90's all very aggressive treads, I have tracked down a nice 18-120-90 Donlop 606 which I think will look snazzy in Nambia!

As well as sizes tyres have

a speed rating - a single letter


a load rating - a number between 10 and 99 ie two digits ..

I suspect teh load rating on the Vee thingy is for a 250 .. ie light weight... I also fell for this trap in Alice Springs OZ .. 45 psi all the way to Perth.

What do you think you will get with the Vee Rubber? Why do you only see Michelin, Bridgestone and Dunlop in the MotoGP?

Stick with the good brands, they KNOW how to make tyres and have proved it. Remember that it is your life running on those two or sometimes one patch of rubber! Is it only worth the difference between 77 and 150 Euro?
