we went the other way - from Addis to N'Djamena - with Ethiopian Airlines. easy enough, quick enough, 'spensive enough!! the Chadian agencies make their money on consular imports so be ready for them to try and rip you off!!
I doubt its any worse going the other way, but we went at Christmas and it took about a week including getting quotes, building the crate, 2 days for Christmas etc. I recall $450 per passenger and $1400 for two bikes incl all paperwork (no carnet as far as I recall). note that Ethiopian only use 757 (Dec 2004) so the door height of 95cm is tight - we had to pack everything super-small! or you have to lay the bikes down. our XR650Rs were upright with front wheel and hadlebars off and no air in the rear tyre to get to 90cm tall.
