Hi, I hear you can't find what you're looking for in the UK, I'm from SA, I live in France and our choice of bike is very varied. It must have to do with the population and land to cover, plenty of bikes to choose from. I've sent you a link already situated on the DR, its in French but you might find your diamond in the rough that you're looking for. Good luck

Which Bike Shall I use Today ?

The worst thing for a biker is trying to find the right bike for the right moment which means you need about six different bikes to do the different things you want to do.
I wanted a bike mainly for road but would do light trails and had enough go in it to keep me happy. My previous bike was a 1500 Goldwing so the V-Strom feels very light to me and represents the best compromise.

size of the tool

Hi Impasto,

We met 2 Japanese girls doing Cape Town to where ever they might end up. They were both on Suzuki Jebels 250. Don't know if that is the same engine as an DR but they performed wonderfully, no troubles at all. In the soft sand you will curse every excess kilo. These bikes were new though. I know one of the girls made it to Sri Lanka without problems! I guess it is not the size of the machine that counts but the state that its in!

Arrrggghh! Never thought of this.... It does sound like ANOTHER idea to seriously consider!!! Never been on a 250 though... bit worried about oomph. Going to look into it, nevertheless...

How about putting dual sport tires on a Harley sporster and going for it. Check out this video.

OK, he didnt get much air on the Jumps, but man, he was doin OK! I sure as heck wouldnt have wanted to try that on a Harley!

The 250 market is full of really good bikes and honestly the DR Dejebl is one of the best as for enough omph they will do 80mph but can struggle on uphills. the engine is a double overhead head with bucket and shims which means valve gap checks every 30000 miles basically maintenance free. also the engine is a air cooled lump.

Way better choice than a DR650.

Ok - its a compromise - but at LEAST I wont pine whilst I'm leaving the Dakar at home!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
