John O'Groats to Cape Town

Hi. I'm really interested in doing an overland trip from John O'Groats to the Cape, but was wondering how you go about booking 5 star hotels along the way? Also, just in case my rear shock go's, how do you get a technical team to replace it within 10 minutes? If I was to get a bit scared where can I hire a team of ex-SAS troopers to see me through the rough parts of France and Italy? Furthermore, if I was to drop my bike in a few inches of sand, where could I find 3 or 4 chaps to come to my aid? One final thing, if I was to get a blister on my little pinky, where could I summon a qualified paramedic? Almost forgot, is it possible to meet the wife half way down for a quick sh*g? Best wishes Ewan

Hi Ewen,
It's possible, but obviously it will be very costly, do you have unlimited resources?
It will also take a great deal of organising, you might want to hire a team of people to do that for you?
You could offset some of the cost, or possibly make money out of the ride by filming it to make a TV series or something? If you take this route you must make the audience believe that its just you, or just you & a friend, man & machine against all the odds. I suggest you watch "Long Way Round", this was something similar, despite two friends riding with a cameraman & a two 4x4 back up team they still said on their DVD cover "2 Men, 4 wheels", you see "seven men, fourteen wheels" wouldn't have the same "Adventure" feel would it?

John O'Groats to the Cape

Sounds great, but first I might try an overland trip to Wales, providing I can get back up and assistance from the BBC, BMW, FCO, St John's Ambulance, Land Rover and the United Nation's. Does anyone know if there is much sand to navigate through and are there are any courses we could go on to stop us from falling off? Lots of Love Ewan & Charlie.........mmmmmmm pampered are we not.

HI Ewan and charlie.
Dont worry your little heads. I've just road from Cape Town to Tel Aviv via cairo and the west coast also on a 1200 GS. it took me all of 37 days, but im sure if you add on a few jeeps and TV crews and whine a lot you could do it a LOT slower.
Oh and balls might come in handy, so the best thing to do is grow a pair

trip to wales

ewan,

have you thought of sending your bike to wales by courier then flying there to meet it? it would save on wear and tear, fuel costs and stop you from getting a chill! once it arrives your team could then buy you your designer clothing and kit bag enabling more time for tea and bickies.
happy adventuring

You're all being a bit harsh guys!

If it wasn't for the likes of LWR/LWD then I would be booked on a package holiday to Spain next year.

On a serious note that Charlie bloke had a good crack at the Dakar; fair dues...

Long way round/down

Sounds like a severe case of envy to me. So what if they do it a bit easier than some, at least they do it and raise a bit of money for charity. Don't take yourselves so seriously, it's just riding a motorbike, whether it's around the corner or around the world, it's just riding a motorbike. I know they re-kindled my interest.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
