Several of you have asked for more details of our “Mongolia 2011” trip so I thought I’d collate what we’ve got so far to see if you want to come along. This is not an itinerary; it’s an idea. It can and will be changed based on others ideas and input and how we fare once on the road. It represents what I and, I think, what Belle want to achieve within the timescale that we’ve got.
Rendezvous at the
ADVrider 2nd Annual German Meet Whitsun weekend, 11, 12 & 13 June 1011, at Niedersolbach, near Siegen in Germany. Camp or take a bunk at €15 per night inc. breakfast, bring your own food to barbeque,
€1! You can ride out or use the time to relax and make any last-minute preparations for the trip.
Weeks One & Two (14th to 25th June): Eastern Europe
Ride c.3000km (average 180 miles per day based on riding five days out of seven, camping or using hostels in when riding, finding hotels when stopped) from Niedersolbach to Lipetsk in Russia via Poland, Belarus and Ukraine
Approximate route:
Hannover, Magdeburg, Poznan, Lodz, Brest, Minsk, Kiev, Kharkov, Belgorod & Voronezh
Things to consider:
• Cost of and difficulty to obtain Belarus visa
• Autobahn, ‘A’ roads or “back roads” through Europe?
• Visit Brest War Memorial, Białowieża Forest, Mir Castle, Lipetsk
• Low daily mileage gives the opportunity to get ahead of schedule
• ADVrider ‘Anton’ lives in Lipetsk and is offering support
Weeks Three & Four (26th June to 9th July): Russia & Siberia
Ride c.4000km (250 miles per day) from Lipetsk to Barnaul in Russia
Approximate route:
Penza, Samara, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Omsk & Novosibirsk
Things to consider:
• There’s not much to see so maybe keep going and get ahead of schedule meaning more likelihood of achieving more later on
Weeks Five & Six (10th to 23nd July): Mongolia
Ride c.1600km (100 miles per day) from Barnaul to Rubtsovsk via Western Mongolia
Approximate route:
Biysk, Aktash, Tashanta, Tsagaannuur, Ulaangom, Khovd, Olgii, Tsagaannuur, Aktash & Tashanta
Things to consider:
• Visit Uvs Nuur Basin
• Ride an additional 1000km loop extending the Mongolian section of the ride from Ulanngom to Baruuntaruun, Uliastai and Altai before returning to Khovd
Weeks Seven & Eight (24th July to 6th August): Central Asia
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Rubtsovsk to Samarqand in Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan
Approximate route:
Semey, Almaty, Osh, Pamir Highway & Dushanbe
Things to consider:
• Visit Almaty & Samarqand
• Time needed to get visas in Almaty
• Political situation in Kyrgyzstan
• Possibility of overnight trip from Sary-Tash to Kashgar in China
• If behind schedule, cut for home from either Almaty or Sary-Tash
Weeks Nine & Ten (7th to 20th August): Three Seas
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Samarqand to Donets’k in Ukraine via Kazakhstan & Russia
Approximate route:
Tashkent, Shymkent, Turkestan, Baikonur, Aralsk, Atyrau & Astrakhan
Things to consider:
• Visit Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Black Sea
• Political situation in Dagestan
• The Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Bulgaria route
• The Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria route
Weeks Eleven & Twelve (21st to 31st August): Central Europe
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Donets’k to Paris via Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic & Germany
Approximate route:
Odessa, Chisinau, Bucharest, Transfăgărăşan, Budapest, Bratislava & Prague
Things to consider:
• Visit Crimea, Odessa, Chisinau, Budapest, Prague
• Political situation in Transdniester
• Where do individuals cut for home
• Six-day maximum overrun from 1st to 6th September
