Travel Insurance

Right, I've been searching thru' the hubb & have found loads of conflicting advice(!) - so after a couple of days searching these are my results.

Note - assumptions, you are a:

1) UK citizen
2) wanting a trip over 90 days
3) on a bike bigger than 125cc

The following companies (which people have reccommended) had general exclusion small print that would invalidate insurance based upon the above assumptions:

World Nomads - Keep Travelling Safely
6 months: £168 worldwide incl usa
Covered: Motor Biking (full UK licence, up to 125cc and helmet to be worn)
General Exclusions:
motorbike touring or where a motorbike is the main mode of transport

Cheap Annual Travel Insurance: Single Trip Travel Insurance: Car Breakdown: Computer
Long Stay travel insurance
You are not covered for
a. claims resulting from motorcycling or quad biking.

Car Insurance, Home Insurance, Travel Insurance, Life Insurance UK
I phoned them up to enquire whether in their extreme travel policy, "overlanding" covered motobike travel. The lady put me on hold and eventually got back to me saying that none of their policies covered motorbike riding - they were just, "standard holiday"-type policies.

Car Insurance, Home Insurance, Travel, Life, Health and Investments - Norwich Union UK
What is not included:
d) You motorcycling:
- as a rider or passenger on a machine over 125cc; or
- as a rider or passenger on a machine 125cc or under unless You wear a crash helmet and, as a rider, You hold a full UK motorcycle licence

The one policy that I found that fits the above assumptions is:

Direct Travel Insurance - Great Value Holiday Insurance and Annual Cover
6 months single trip insurance
page 35, General Exclusions
"2
Anything caused by:
f) you
travelling on a motorcycle over 125cc, unless the rider holds a valid licence which lets them ride a

motorcycle of more than 125cc;"
Total cost: £143

I hope this helps some of you guys looking for insurance!

Thanks for doing all that legwork! I bet it is really rare that anyone is actually covered for all the things they do when travelling abroad. As soon as I realised how piss-poor the cover on these policies was, I stopped buying them. As I only spend about 3 months of the year in the UK these days, I would have trouble getting cover at anywhere near reasonable cost. I've resigned myself to just paying for treatment when the proverbial hits the fan. I think of it as underwriting my own risks.

It's not strictly true... I phoned them up and spoke to them in detail..

Cheap Annual Travel Insurance: Single Trip Travel Insurance: Car Breakdown: Computer

cover motorcycles for your trip, they do not cover races/competitions... and for me for 2 months cost £40.

if you have broken a bone in the last 6 months they wont cover that particular bone but will cover you (i fractured my scaphoid within that timescale)

i thought the deal was: we pay your medical expences but if you were riding a bike u cannot claim compensation in case of loss of an arm for example.
Am i wrong?

I used Halifax for my travel insurance when I went to Morocco in 2006, and again for the USA in 2007 - they do allow you to ride motorcycles over 125cc.

I now have an American Express world policy which also covers you for riding a motorcycle...

Hope that helps too,

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
