Container Share Malaysia to Indonesia

Hi all,

We are planning on shipping our vehicle from Port Klang or Penang, to Indonesia towards the end of April,

We are looking for others who would be interested in sharing the costs (4x4's or Bikes) ?

In September we are also planning to ship from Dilli to Darwin if anyone would be interested in sharing then too ?

Many thanks

Martin & Nicole

Hi pepebayeta,

We only need to give 10 days notice for the shipping, we are also quite flexible with dates,

Just drop us an email once you know your dates, and maybe we can arrange something together.

To get our 4x4 into Indonesia we were advised to get a letter of invitation from IkatanMotor Indonesia and a police letter. They provide the LOI for free but charge $20 for a police letter. Our contact there is: yanuar_danie@yahoo.com

sharing

Hi Martin,

We also want to go to Indonesia end april/begin may AND dili to darwin in july. We have two bikes so we're interested in sharing a container.
Do you have insights in the costs? And you'll also apply for a 2 months visa and have any info on the paperwork for that (I heard something about that they want to see a ticket our of the country)?

You do not need a container if you ship from Penang to Belawan (Medan). Search for Cakra Shipping / Mr Lim. Bike will be loaded on a "vegetable boat" with crane. Cost is about $200.

I did not need a flight ticket for my 60 days Indonesian tourist visa. Depends on embassy. (I went the other way/ applied in Dili, East Timor)

Cheers,

Frank

Thanks Frank,

We went to see Mr Lim a few weeks back,

We are travelling with a 4x4, and he says that they will not put cars on the wooden boats anymore, so it is not an option for us.

He did confirm they would still take bikes .

Els
We have been quoted £540 (2700r) by both Mr Lim, shipping from Penang and Aseantex Marine Services shipping from KL for a 20ft container, if we were to share we need a 40ft, which will increase the costs a bit maybe an extra 150. If we were say to share the costs. Us 2/3 (£460) you two 1/3 (£230),

Which is a little less for both of us,

Im not sure what the port fees etc are for shipping by wooden boat (maybe frank can let us know), but it should be about £250 to clear the container through an agent inc port fees. Again if we were to split 2/3 1/3 there would be additional £83 to add on. Total £940, Split £616 / £313.

Let me know if your interested, and i will get quotes for 40ft, and clearance on the other end, it may be possible to do it our selves, but im not sure it would save that much.

Hi Martin,

Don't need to get to Indonesia oursleves but know of 3 bikers in south east Asia who are heading down to Malaysia and will be interested and have just emailed them the link to this post so hopefully you'll have a full load.

They'll, no doubt, be in touch soon.

Hi Martin,

I think Mr. Lims onionboat is a cheaper option for us. But thanks anyway!
Maybe see you on the road somewhere.

Funny, when I crossed beginning of January Mr Lim told me there was another boat which would take cars...
Anyway there is a little scam going on. Both sides (Indonesia and Malaysia) want to get there piece of cake.
I shipped from Indonesia to Malaysia which is harder (more expensive).

I did everything myself on the Indonesian side, but in the end a shipping agent appeared and wanted cash. I paid everything in Malaysia to Mr Lim.

Another option would be Tunas Sejati / Mr Ooi in Penang. Tel. 04264171617
I made the mistake contacting Mr Lim again and he charged quite a lot including the charge for the Indonesian side. No receipt given...

For me dealing with customs in Belawan was very quick and straight forward. Try not to use a shipping agent on the Indonesian side when clearing the vehicle.

Shipping a motorcycle by container requires most probably a crate...

Hi Frank, following your message i asked Mr Lim again, this is the response i got:

"Dear Martin,

To ship 4x4 by wooden boat is expensive, both charges in Penang & Belawan is about RM 5000.00, thats why many shipper prefer to go by container vessel, its cheap & safe."

Seems to keep changing his mind whether they will ship 4x4's, the price is crazy too.
