Trip transport - mega forum
Grant,
One of my two brain cells came up with this thought, post #2 in here refers:-
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...345#post176295
There are posts that recommend transport companies and others that do the opposite; could be timely to split things into regional considerations?
Cheers,

Hi Dave.
I thought best to reply directly on this thread.
I agree that HU website is vast. By far the biggest biking info web that I know of.
As Grant says there is the "shipping list" but getting the info from that section isn't always easy and I notice that some of the posts go back a few years. Prices that are listed and services given at that time will have changed quite dramatically by now.
I agree that there could be some other way to make it easier to identify posts or information to specific geographical locations but I'm not sure how the logistics of the site itself would work.
Having thought about it a sort of "shipping lane" map might work.
Click on the city (say London) and then drag the pointer to Sydney and you can add posts or read posts for that route. Also click on a country and people could add info relating to that country such as insurance etc.
The big drawback is I know myself how much websites cost to modify and maintain so that may not be feasible from HU's point of view.
Where's your next trip?
Best
Roddy

Hi,
I've been thinking about this - and have come to a "no" conclusion regarding splitting the Trip Transport forum up regionally!
What region is a UK to USA shipment?
Or how about Australia to Egypt?
It's just not possible.
However - as Roddy came up with, we are working on a flashy new system - including a map - that you can click on from and to locations on the map to get shipping reports. It's been in the planning for some time, and we are getting closer, but it will be a while yet.
As for the shipments being "old" - yes, and there is a "last 2 years only" check box when searching. Things DO change, but unless people put in the info to keep it up-to-date, we won't have any information. I think something is better than nothing, and reading about peoples experiences is a great teacher. Even if a shipment is 5 years old, there are often still lessons to be learned. And if you see a good post about a shipper from 5 years ago, and a recent one confirming, you know you've got someone that's been at it a while, and should be good, so all the "old" data is still useful!
He's also very right about costs - this isn't easy, it's a big deal to upgrade it, so please bear with us - and put YOUR shipping experience into the system so all can benefit!

Grant,
Thanks for the reply and your time.
"oceans/seas to be crossed rather than continents to be travelled" are the regions (so, the UK-USA is the atlantic) - I guess the map idea will achieve that, something like this one, but on a bigger scale:-
Direct Ferries UK to Ireland, France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia
Easyjet etc etc all use this facility of course.
Roddy,
Appreciate your response, as per the other thread about shipping to the States.
For the near/intermediate future I will be restricted to short trips in and around UK/Europe at the most, and that will be "on a good day" - employment calls!!
Cheers,

Nice to have another brain thinking through the obvious - duh...
However, yes our map system should be as good as the one you pointed out - I was aware of that one. Very nice. Just give us time
