Will any solenoid do?
I'm looking for a spare solenoid for my 2004 TT600RE. There's on one Ebay but it'll cost £40 with shipping. Will any universal solenoid work, or are these to be avoided?

Doesn't your solenoid have the fuse box built into it ?

My 2003 xt600 uses the same as some 350 raptor atv's.
I buy them on ebay, shipped from china for something like 10us$
The wires sits opposit on this relay, and you need to reuse the rubberstrap/mount.

Any solenoid will work as long as it fits in the designated compartment. Make sure its the correct voltage too. It's just a simple switch. I wouldn't get a cheap one if you can help it. Some of the ones I have bought cheap off e-bay have crapped out on me in just a few months. It's really hit and miss with the cheap ones.

I've also been told the cheap starter solenoids don't last long.
I had a cheap one fail on my bike, but it was on the bike when I bought it, so don't know how old it was.

Ok, sounds like the cheap universal ones aren't too reliable, but are probably fine in a pinch. I'll take two 10£ spares rather than a 50£ original. I suspect the universal type would be widely available in Africa as well, where I'm headed.

Why take any spare solenoid? They are generally reliable and any half decent mechanic will be able to bodge a universal Chinese one (available anywhere where there are Chinese 125's) to work in an emergency. You can't carry spares for everything, I would save your spares weight and money budget for things which are much more bike specific (brake pads for example)

Thanks for your input. One spare it is. I was told by the previous owner that this model can burn them out semi regularly, but the current one has been in there long enough.
The packing list is indeed getting a little out of hand haha.
