By their own admission Two Feathers and Vicky are white trash and they manage the camp site I stayed at on Swan Lake. “Are you Welsh” “Er, no? I’m from London!” “Is that in Australia?” “No, England!” “Oh yeah, I can hear your Irish accent now!” After giving me a pitch at half price for having a bike I was invited back down to their trailer for Jagermeister and beers, and I left them the next day clutching a frozen elk stake for me to BBQ. Although I only understood about one word in three they were wonderful hosts.

While up mountains at 5000m, it is unwise to make massive, life-changing plans. The lack of oxygen may well be affecting you. So if you decide suddenly to go on a round-the-world adventure on a 21yr old motorbike for a year or more, think Very Carefully. Or just do it.

My girlfriend and I decide to go for a ridiculous scooter adventure. And I think we accomplished that. We jumped on our 49cc Yamaha C3 Scooter, completely overloaded it, and then rode it over the Mountains in BC, from Vancouver, BC, Canada, to Toronto, Ontario.
4500kms, in 11days. We even did 650kms one day! Not bad on a scooter that wouldn't go faster than 55kms/hr downhill. Don't get me started on uphills!

"Dave Barr, from California, rode his 1972 Harley-Davidson around the world. Six continents, three and a half years (September 1990 - May 1994) and 83,000 miles. Dave is the only one to tour the world on a Harley. If this wasn't enough of a distinction, he's also the only disabled person to have accomplished such a feat. Dave is a double amputee, lost both of his legs to a land mine explosion in Angola in 1981. Dave has written and published 'Riding The Edge'. Deciding he needed yet another challenge, in the WINTER of 1996-97, he started at the French coast of the Atlantic Ocean and across Europe, Russia and Siberia all the way to the Pacific Ocean! The total mileage of the journey was 13,000 ridden miles. Documented in 'Riding the Ice'" .

The World on two Wheels - el Mundo en dos Ruedas
|
|
By Anonymous at 2008-12-13 08:17
|
The World on two Wheels is the great adventure of crossing more than 80 countries and 4 continents in 3 years, estimated time to return the same starting point in order to demonstrate that when someone proposes a goal, so is the more difficult can achieve more impossible as it may seem. The trip was born in the mind of the adventurer Oscar Ayala, he visited on his vacations, different countries and the question became why not make a trip around the world? Moreover, new friends, remote sites, cities, towns, hiking not imagined, reserved only for the few.

Its not the going to the Black Sea that is the problem, it's the lack of rear suspension, brakes, power, in fact everything most people take for granted that come with a bike. So will the 60 year old bike make it? Will the similarly decrepit rider?

A country-by-country blog, by two very experienced travelers in all parts of the world; Tell it like we experience it, do not seek to be obscurely delicate. Photos/videos included as we have time to upload them – the trip is in progress so computer time is scarce. Hotels, restaurants and other straight-forward recommendations/pans. It's a bike trip (this time) but have done pretty well all of Africa, Europe, the Americas by road & plane, so have a solid basis of comparison. He's 62 (hence the "wheezy") biz exec and she's 28, a French teacher, an unusual couple. Our point: Anyone can do this trip, here's how we did it; we know of no one else who did it on a GL1800 and so far no regrets on bike choice ... owned many BMW's too, so know bikes and 2nd-3rd world realities.

"A motorcycle functions entirely in accordance with the laws of reason, and a study of the art of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniature study of the art of rationality itself". ~Robert M. Pirsig

Going The Distance: The PanAmerican Ural Love Quest...
|
|
By Anonymous at 2009-08-05 00:24
|
Every other marriage in the UK ends in divorce.
Mike and Alanna got married 6 months ago, and have set out from Alaska to head to Patagonia on a Ural Tourist T motorbike and sidecar, to find out how to stay together for life. On the way, they are meeting couples to get their love stories and advice on what it takes to go the distance. In addition to this, they have met with various internationally renowned scientists who believe they can pinpoint the scientific secrets of love - and they've put their own love to the test (brain-scans, DNA tests, heart-rate monitors, etc). Only when they get to the end of thew road will they find out the predictions of these scientists. And if the findings suggest they will stay together, then they will renew their vows in the church at the end of the world.
As they travel south, they are meeting couples who embody the stories of the places which we are travelling through. In Alaska alone they have met a Russian Old Believers couple from the Kenai Peninsula living in the old tradition, a hippy couple in Girdwood, a homestead couple near Fairbanks, a former national downhill skier, a young urban couple in Anchorage and a Native Alaskan couple who have been married for 32 years, a trapper in Fairbanks, an Iditerod musher, and in Dawson City, they met a goldminer of 30 years (married for 64 years!). They attended a wedding on De Courcy island of a local Vancouver artist, and met with a gay couple who adopted a son, in Vancouver. Each of these couples has their own unique take on love, what makes relationships work - and the kind of things we can do and to go the distance.

Around the world. "I'm just trying to inspire people to do a dream trip. Most people say they can't do it. No time, no money, whatever, but I believe it comes down to desire. I had to quit a good business, give all my customers away to my competition, as sell some 'toys' to do this trip. I had the desire!"

I’ve cooked up this scheme where I’m going to spend 26 days, riding from my home in San Diego all the way to Montreal to see a Formula 1 race. I’ve also shanghaied my friend and fellow F1 aficionado, Adam into this little adventure and on the 11th of May, we’ll be setting off to the Great White North. Our route will take us through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Ontario and Quebec."

"Having trekked to Everest Base Camp, rafted down the Sun-Kosi River in Nepal, travelled extensively through the Australian deserts, rode BMW motorbikes through Asia, and travelled overland from Hong Kong to Pakistan through China we were after another adventure.
In 1998/1999 myself, Geoff Kingsmill, a computer consultant from Alice Springs Australia, my wife Kienny and nine year old daughter Su-lin shipped our Toyota Landcruiser to South Africa and then drove to London. The lure of Africa was just too much so in 2000 we spent two months travelling through the Sahara Desert in Tunisia and Libya.
Not being content, we hit the road again in 2004 and drove through Russia, Mongolia and Scandinavia to Europe, starting in Vladivostok on the sea of Japan and finishing in London, some 25,000km to the west."
Very good, plenty of info on Africa (of special interest is the Sudan - Ethiopia - Egypt bits); Russian and Mongolia. Please find the updated information on using a GPS in Russia and Mongolia.

"We are Dan and Linz. We are trundling around the globe on motorbikes with a tent. The big plan is to go around the world, from East to West, over the course of 3 years..." We each have a Suzuki DRZ400S, certainly not the most popular choice for a long distance biker, but that’s something that appeals to us. Linz is a mere 5′ 3″, weak as a baby and stubborn, so the bike choice was limited!

I bought a new BMW R1200GS in Anchorage, and didn't want (nor could really afford) a set of Jessies. I heard horror stories about breaking the standard BMW panniers later, and as I am on the road to Argentina figured I should stop somewhere and relieve myself of the worry. I am using the trip as an opportunity to raise awareness of the charity Riders for Health, whose work is making a real difference. The journey starts in London in early April 2004, and will end several months later, when I return...I will also be riding a new(ish) Honda XR650L, which is currently being prepared by David Lambeth. "In April 2003 we embarked upon a two-year, trans-world expedition in our custom-built, 6x6 Land-Rover called Nyathi. We intend to cover a distance of over 150,000kms, traversing more than 60 countries. We planned the trip for the best part of three years and jumped out of the rat race into the panic of what were last minute trip preparations..."

We knew travelling in Central Asia and Russia during the early parts of winter was going to be cold. Temps dropped to -15 degrees outside and almost -4 inside the 4x4. Wrap up warm folks.

Karin-Marijke and Coen, an adventurous Dutch couple, driving around the world in an antique Land Cruiser, model BJ45. We simply sold everything we had and started driving east. During our first 5 years on the road we travelled from Holland via Iran, Pakistan, India,China, Bhutan and Bangladesh to South East Asia where we visited Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Since January 2007 we've been exploring the beautiful countries of South America.
Some say we are the slowest travelling people they know, but for us it is all about enjoying the experience. We love driving on little roads and roaming around, getting lost and seeing what the world has to offer - tasting it, feeling it, hearing it and smelling it. Forget about planning; forget about our initial two years time-limit. This adventure has become our life, and we love what we do.
