Enquiry : How many kms on a XT ?

Let see your experiences ..i mean without opening the lower half of the engine -
let we consider cam chain and rebore as ordinary manutention

Here's mine
- 1981 XT500 68.500 kms (one cam chain , no rebore)
- 1983 Teneré 34L 78.500 km (then stolen, one cam chain , no rebore)
- 1986 Teneré 1VJ 88.500 kms (two rebore -)
- 1990 2KF bought used with "officially" 34.000 kms , trip was broken on the ten-thousand digit, engine was rebored at 4th oversize (so or it had endure 3 more rebore or who made the work was a dog..) my estimate >100.000 kms...

XTZ660 3YF of 1992 : bought in 1995 with 11.000 km [??] always consumed a lot of oil, opened at 50.000 km., replaced piston [1st oversize] and found the cause : the 3rd inlet valve stem seal. Forgot to replace the cam chain. Will do it now at 80.000 km.

Hi !

XT 600E 3TB, 1991, 79.000 km ( one cam chain, no rebore )
XTZ 660 4BW, 1996, 120.000 km ( one cam chain, no rebore but ones opened and changed rings, piston, gaskets, inlet valve seals ). Same as Freds Tenere, always consumpts a lot of oil but going and going.......

1985 Tenere, 45000km, rebore, bearings, crank rebuild, timing chain.... but then I guess Im a bit of a girl.

1VJ Tenere 1987 bought at 42.000km in original condition - engine not opened, as the previous owner told me (?)

first time opened at 100.000km, new cylinder 3AJ model, new fifths gear, new cam chain

second time opened at 170.000km, noise from the cam chain, replaced, one crankshaft bearing turned on the crankshaft, outer clutch housing worn- no parts in Colombia for the 1VJ

third time opened at 192.000km, new crankshaft and new cylinder (at Yamaha in the factory nobody rebores a cylinder) and many other new parts

now 215.000km no problems, the engine never consumed oil

maybe another 60.000km before I am back home

Hi there,

1992 XT600E, purchased in 2000 with 4000kms, no there isn't a zero missing!
At 60,000kms, rebore, cam-chain, new seals etc.
Still going at 75,000kms, now on the way home!

On a 96 xt600 - nothing major. At 60 000 klms just changed tyres, drive chains and front bulbs. Serviced as per Yamaha and driven gently, really gently.

XT600Z Ténéré 1990 (brazilian 2VG, almost the same as european 3AJ)

76.562km this morning (50.000 in the last 3 years ;-) ), engine still "sealed"... now it start to make some noise (tec-tec-tec...) I'll need a new cam-chain soon... :-(

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
