Insurance South America
Like most we set out over here without third party cover as everything we had heard and seen and tried made it seem impossible.
Since arrival we have met two people with cover through Mapfre (Argentina) who will cover third party for all of America Sur (ie not Peru).
The catch is we tried down here in Ushuaia and they told us it was impossible, acn only do provence cover. Would have to have arranged it in BA.
Any chance anyone knows if there is a way round this ? Seems about 100 quid for a year of 100 euros six months.
Would much prefer cover, but seems impossible unless arranged in capital.
May prove heplful for anyone coming through Argentina in future.
If anyone knows a way to get this cover outside of BA please stick an answer on

In Peru the compulsory insurance is called SOAT & you can buy it just about anywhere...try asking at a large Grifo gas station.
Costs around US $40 for a year & worth having, the cops get very upset if you dont have it.

hola,
insurance in south america ?
I spend two years riding around, more than 80 tkm.
any I think I asked only three times.
twice in colombia from the police, and crossing into suriname from the customs.
......
colombian policeman: do you have insurance ?
stupid tourist: yes, sir.
colombian policeman: please show it to me.
stupid tourist: here, this is the German registration card, this means I have insurance all over the world.
colombian policeman: what ? no, I want to see colombian insurance.
stupid tourist: oh, do they sell insurance against kidnapping here ? I go to Bogota, where can I buy it ?
colombian policeman: a big smile in his face : have a good ride to Bogota.
.....
having a local insurance paper can safe you from a lot of police hassle if you have an accident, but you will have to pay cash anyway. dont think that the insurance is going to pay ... anyway to keep your mind at peace, buy insurance. I never did.
suerte
mika

Just had reports from my cousin and a couple of friends who just landed in Chile and all report that insurance is now COMPULSORY. More details when I get them, but it seems that the days when you could ride without are over.

Insurance in Chile and Argentina are both compulsory. We are on the road currently in Punta Arenas heading for Ushaia tomorrow. We are riding UK registered bikes (red Honda NX400´s) and the legislation for Chile requiring insurance for all bikes including foreign registered bikes came into force in Sept 2005. We spent two and a half days in Valparaiso going round in circles trying to get somebody to sell it to us - and finally got it from Cruz del Sur. NB it runs 1 April 2005 to 31 March 2006 for everybody. ie it runs out end march so you have to buy it again (45000 pesos) if you´re still in the country. (We managed to get it for 30,000 pesos as it´s nearly the end of the period.) Note it only covers you for 3rd party damage to people NOT vehicles or property.... We bought 3rd party insurance for Argentinia which apparently covers us for people and vehicles from Liderar (Argentinian company) in Pucon. they also have an office in Osorno and Bariloche. It cost us 19,500 pesos each for 30 days (postdated as we´re not there yet). Hope this is helpful.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
