African NP's and Motorbikes
Greetings All,

I am well aware that NAmibia and Botswana do not allow motorbikes into their National Oarks, which is fully understandable. I guess a motorbiker is easier to eat then a Range Rover? Anyways, is this a consistent policy throughout Africa? Since my other travels have involved 4 wheels, I neglected to remember if it is a consistent policy on behalf of the NP's, or just in Namibia or Botswana. (I'll be in SA, NAM, BOTS, MOZ, MAL, TAN, KEN, ETH, SUD, and then...)

Hi,

So far as I have heard and have experienced, for SA, NAM, BOTS, MAL, TAN, KEN, no parks let you in. Don't know about the others, but I would expect the same.

There is the odd exception when you have to transit the park because it is the only road, but don't plan on getting into any parks with a bike.

Bummer, especially when it is really silly. There is a park in Namibia where there are no lions elephants etc. and you WALK around the park freely, and the parking lot is less than a half mile in from the gate, but no bikes allowed. And you can see people walking around! It's very near Windhoek, can't remember the name. The argument was that the bike would disturb the animals. We were on a BMW.

Have a great trip anyway, there are ways to deal with it, including renting 4wd when appropriate!

If you have a light bike, you can always get a lift acros an a bakkie or truck.

No, no light bike. Well, lighter than a Beemer, heavier than a bicycle. I think the National Park Grant is taking about is the Daan Viljoen Game Park? I dunno. Anyways, the answers I received were what I thought. The Park life in West Africa is quite different, as motorbikes were allowed in. (Mauritania, Senegal, and Ghana all had soime Parks where you could boot around on your bike)

Yes, Daan Viljoen Game Park sounds right. Too bad about the silly rules, and we argued with them for an hour and got nowhere.

Interesting to hear about West African parks, we'll have to go there! Do you have names of parks by any chance??

There are a couple (2 only) I think in SA which are not game parks and allow m'cycles - one I have ridden through near Bethlehem, good road, great scenery but cold, its up high near Lesotho.

There is a park in the middle of Tanzania on the road down to Malawi from Dar. All traffic has to go through it and bikes are allowed too. I nearly hit a giraffe.
North of Cameroon - right in the tip there is a park where you can freely roam on bikes - loads of wildlife. West Africa is generally a lot easier to get into the parks

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
