Sir - did you have any joy with sending the bike from Caracas to Panama City, or anyone for that matter ?
I intend to do the same thing shortly.
Cheers
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy
From Striking Viking's website ( www.strikingviking.org):
Quote:
"04/18/2002 - Striking Viking
HOPPING CONTINENTS
Complications were arising quick in Manaus as the situation in Venezuela deteriorated and now according to local reports, is on the brink of massive civil disturbance, maybe war. Numerous warnings from Uncle Sam convinced me to air freight out of Brasil direct into Panama, something we had been looking into for weeks just in case.
Problems of lengthy red tape delays and a twenty seven hundred dollar cost to ship a broke down three thousand dollar bike didn't seem to make sense. With a tremendous amount of fancy footwork which I will go into later and the magic of the Aspen Silver Company, the limping KLR has been transformed into a bright yellow BMW650GS in Panama City."
|
I take the above to mean he didn't ever ship the bike from Caracas or anywhere else in South America.
I do know Greg Frazier shipped out of Caracas in 1998, I think either to Panama or Miami, so I've written to him to ask what his experience was, and contact details in Caracas.
Keep watching this space!

Hi Jeremy
The following response from Greg Frazier to my inquiry:
Quote:
Hi Susan:
Shipped to Miami. Used some cargo plane that went to Colombia or Panama first, then on to Miami. I just went to the airport and started asking. The hustlers there grab you at the gate.

Hi Greg
Was wondering where you shipped from Caracas to back in 1998 - was it Panama or Miami or ???
We have an inquiry on the HUBB looking for info on shipping from Caracas to Panama City. Maybe whoever you shipped with can do this routing, and if you recommend them, perhaps you could supply the contact details on the HUBB - here's the post. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000200.html
Thanks in advance

Jeremy, as you can see, Greg really plans things out in advance!
I would start with Challenge Air Cargo, who do a lot of air shipping down in Latin America, and who we have had good results with.

I tried to find a Caracas office for them, but their website is down at the minute. Let me know if you have troubles getting through.
You might also try Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, who have done a number of successful shipments we know of (though no reports from Caracas). Their agents in Caracas:
Mrs. Gabi Alvarez, Export Manager
Universal Cargo C.A.
Avenida Libertador; Centro Profesional Libertador; Local Planta Baja; Urb. la Florida
Caracas
Telephone: 58 212 7315684 /7315883
Fax: 58 212 7314536
Email: alvarez@eldish.net
Good luck!
Susan
