Carnet Overview -Africa
Hello everyone,
Maybe you can all help me compile a little list...
The question is: Do you know which African countries DO NOT require a carnet?
If you are certain please list below.
For example I have heard so far that countries not asking for one are:
1) Morocco
2) Mali
3) Mauritania
There must be more.
(Please don´t tell me to talk to my local Automobile A. Already tried that on previous occasions...)
Thanxxx,
G.-

I guess we can start it with a reply to myself.
Just read that the following don´t require a Carnet:
4) Senegal
5) Niger
6) Burkina Faso
That makes six.
Hope the list continues, the idea being to see how far we can get without one...
Saludos,
G.

Also not needed for
Tunesia
Libya (if you get in at all)
South Africa, Namibia and Botswana have a 'customs union'. You DO need a carnet to get in but dont need to get it stamped when you go from one to another of the three countries.

Thank you Pete!
So we now have:
1) Morocco
2) Mauritania
3) Mali
4) Senegal
5) Niger
6) Burkina Faso
7) Tunisia
8) Libya
Going once!
Going twice!
Or... do I hear more out there ladies and gentlemen?
G.
PS: (looks like if we stay in the Sahara where doing ok...)

They didn't check ours at theEthiopian border, but it was useful to get a visa for Ethiopia in Karthoum without having to buy a Rtn flight ticket and cancelling after.
They never asked for one in Mozambique either, and if I rememeber Zimbabwe use them but also provide temporal import document.

What I've heard is that you don't need a carnet from SA to Kenya. That's 8 countries. Kenya can be difficult

I know of one person who drove from Kenya to SA without a carnet, but it took a very long time at each border (i.e. days and days) and entailed forwarding evidence of money on deposit in bank accounts, taking detours to sleepy border crossing, back tracking from those who weren't playing the game and so on. On the other hand, I went through Tanzania, Kenya etc without much fuss with a carnet in hand. My advice is get a carnet, but only start producing it once you through N Africa. </font>

This is in line with our experience of flying into Kenya, and coming into Tanzania overland with a carnet. Piece of cake. Without it, very difficult.

Met an Irish guy who went Europe, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, SA without using a carnet at all.
OK so he had to buy one in Egypt leaving the bike in Nuweiba and discharged it in Aswan where he had to return to Cairo to get his cash back. But it can be done!
My advice - get a carnet!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
