Selling USA-registered bike in Argentina
I will buy a bike in USA, and drive through Central- and South America. When I arrive in Argentina I will sell the bike before returning to Norway. Is this possible/easy/difficult? I will travel without a Carnet, and the bike will probably be a Honda XR650L or similar.

Hi,
I am from Paraguay, and when I was still living there, I bought a Honda XL600LM from a guy who was riding overland through South America. I know of other people who also bought bikes that entered the country travelling, but I don't know how you handle the stamping in your passport or any other requirement to leave the country.
If you ever pass through Paraguay, send me an email before, I'll be leaving there and I people (who might be interested)
Good luck!

Hi Erling
Ryan Wagner and Dan Koengeter did try without success to sell their bikes (US registered) in Argentina in November, 2000, but were able to sell them in Bolivia.
" ... selling our motorcycles due to expected and upcoming outrageous gasoline prices of Argentina ($4.00 a gallon—a lot for a spoiled North American). Plus, the sale of foreign vehicles in Argentina are illegal, laws are more strictly enforced, and it is getting quite cool in Argentina for riding. We ended up selling the (beloved, but thrashed 1980 and 1983 Hondas) for US$1050 each (a profit of US$200 each), even after 9 months of abuse."

More recently, Jane Banbury and Dave Norris (Babe and Yahoo) reported they couldn't sell their bikes in Brazil, but were successful in Chile. From their story in last month's e-zine:
"Driving back to Chile we once again visted places we had been before, Salta, San Pedro de Atacama, and eventually Iquique. At San Pedro we met Brian, an American motorcyclist who was on a Super Tenere. We rode together to Iquique where we hoped to sell our bikes wary of problems like we had encountered in Brazil. When we got there it only took us two hours to sell the bikes and we did not even have to wash them! Iquique was our best bet for selling the bikes. It’s a duty free port and we new other poeple who had managed the same thing but it was a relief to find how easy it was and now it was time to celebrate." More details on their page re Brazil. http://www.lostsheep.com/diaries/tex...asp?EntryID=71
So, good news and bad news. Good luck and let us know how you go.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
