Motorcycle Circumnavigators of the World

How many people have circumnavigated the world by motorcycle?

Mark Holmes rode around the world on his Triumph Rocket X in 2017 / 2018 wondering how many people had circumnavigated before him. Unable to find an answer he started work with HU to create a definitive list, researching fastidiously to determine the number, as well as noting names, dates, bikes, countries and so on. The list is now published on Horizons Unlimited as an open source to enable the global motorcycle community to contribute to it.

The list now has has over 320 names on it, and includes the first man, Carl Stearns Clancy in 1912, the first woman, Joy McKean in 1955, the youngest person, Mike Schram, and the fastest person, Nick Sanders.

DISCLAIMER: This copyrighted listing by Horizons Unlimited is the result of extensive unverified and unsubstantiated research by Mark Holmes, more by Grant Johnson and others, and is a "so far as we know" document. Sources are potentially unreliable. We make no claim that it's either definitive, totally, or even partially accurate. We hope that over time it will evolve and become more accurate, but it will never be perfect. Inclusion in this table does not attest to the veracity of the data nor should be used as a scholarly basis for research or connoting validation of referenced citations. You can help by supplying us with what you know, and most importantly, reliable sourcing information.

This is a PRELIMINARY, IN PROGRESS document and has no resemblance to the final. We're working on design and formatting as we go also. We're more concerned about content than form right now.

Rules / Criteria

Very simple, and we know there will be all sorts of disagreement, but in order to have something that most could agree on without excess rigour, this is what was decided:

  • A circumnavigation of the world, starting at any point and finishing at the same approximate point.
  • Powered two wheels – Motorcycle, moped, scooter. Sidecars permitted.
  • Any direction, any continent, and any country.
  • Continuous journey by motorcycle. Breaks permitted.
  • Same motorcycle not required for the whole trip, it's ok to change.
  • Ocean passages permitted by sea or air.
  • Air over short sections of land not currently doable for whatever reason (e.g. war, pandemic) ok.
  • Rider and pillion included.
