27/5/00 Crossed the Botswana border at Buitepos. Due to the southern african agreement between Namibia, South Africa and Botswana there was no need to produce the carnet and five minutes out and in with a road tax of $US 1.25 for Botswana. The Kalahari isn't your usual desert. Although sandy it is flat and gets enough rain in this area to support scrub and small trees. This year it looks positively lush with tall golden grasses because of the heavy rains earlier. Unfenced we saw small wildlife of warthog, steenbok, ostrich, jackal, secretary birds and hornbills along the road before free camping 50 km short of Kang.

28/5/00 We started this trip in the cold and are finishing it the same way with a frost on the grass. Botswana is supposed only to be looking for upmarket tourists and judging by the lack of roadside campgrounds that's what they are getting. Gaborone, the capital, a modern fast growing concrete jungle with no past. 1150 km in two days and it's just a rest stop towards South Africa.
