Coming from Malawi
23/3/00 A quick transit of Mozambique because of the floods down south preventing us travelling that way now. A past Portuguese colony. 20 minutes at the border and corruption rife. Customs asked for $US 5.00 for the vehicle permit. Official receipt 45,000 kwacha or $US 3.00. Immigration asked $US 5.00 for stamping passports with official receipt but $US 2.00 if no receipt. Insurance for vehicle $US 15.00 but $US 10.00 to overlook the matter. We insisted we had insurance and were eventually let through without payment. The customs officer stating he has no power to enforce us to buy the insurance. We also paid immigration without a receipt. A bribe? An instantly obviously wealthier country than Malawi. Tete for the night on the shores of the magnificent Zambezi River. Western goods in the shops, prices for better food higher and more motorcycles on the street obvious signs of a wealthier place.
24/3/00 Loaded up all spare fuel containers and topped
up the motorcycle. There have been fuel shortages in Zimbabwe now for over
a month and all the horror stories abound from other travellers. We now carry
35 litres or enough for about 650 km of steady driving.
