Coming from  Uganda

29/1/00 To the Rwandan border, 25 km of dense morning fog and with the border not opening till 9 am we had a short wait in the cold air. 45 minutes out of Uganda and 30 minutes into Rwanda, visas $US 35.00 each and no payment for the motorcycle. Rwanda is reported to be one of the most densely populated countries and also the most beautiful in Africa. The vast tea plantations in the valleys and banana cultivated hills, greenery everywhere looked beautiful. The people friendly and waving at our passing. Kigali, the capital for the night. A mixture of orphaned beggars and Mercedes motorcars. A large percentage of cars on the road are Aid Agencies, almost everyone represented here. It seems to get the worlds attention, and aid, you need a calamity of what happened in Rwanda in 1994-96. The town (small city) thriving but dead after 6.00 pm, a reminder of the recent night time curfew, the streets empty and despite our hotel overlooking a main road there was no traffic noise at night.

30/1/00 Our hotel, third on our list of preferences as one had disappeared completely and the other had been taken over by UNHCR for refugees. We had no running water despite an ensuite and $US 20.00 a night price tag. Water was supplied in plastic containers and a bucket of hot water was provided in the morning. We headed out for the Burundi border, past many recently built refugee resettlement villages, still the same highly cultivated mountain slopes.
