Coming from  The Gambia
 

18/3/01 Again an easy border crossing with only token requests for "cadeau" or gifts. The road improved half way to Kaolack and remained good all the way to Thies for the night. We were stopped at one check post and managed to avoid a couple of others.

19/3/01 Still intestinally weakened but improving we headed for St Louis for a quick view of the island city from the mainland and the old European Danube spanning bridge looking graceful in this turmoiled setting. Like Europe's discarded Mercedes they look out of place with the horse drawn carts, both vying for custom as taxi's. The traffic thinned, north, as did the carnage of animals lying roadside on Senegal's busiest road between Dakar and St Louis. The main combatants with trucks were the docile donkeys and sheep, the vultures prize. Another ferry crossing and border. Bridges are free to cross but expensive to build. Ferries everyone pays. The Senegal formalities efficient but a compulsory $US 0.80 payment for parking while we waited for the four times daily Mauritanian run ferry.
