Adventure travel show

Came across an adventure travel show on the web, planned for Feb. Be something to do if you're not on the road somewhere.
Overland & 4x4 Travel Show - Home
Anyone thinking of going? I see some familiar names on the exhibitors list...

moggy 1968 1 Jan 2011 16:12

I might go, if only to laugh at all the tat people try and flog you as 'expedition essentials'!
you never know there might be something useful in there in amongst all the nonsense!:Beach:

Lonesome George 1 Jan 2011 16:50

I might go. I'm currently in the middle of my year off traveling the world but will be back in the UK for Feb. And I live near Lemington so no reason not to go.

We should all meet up and have a motorbike group that walks around and laughs at all the "stuff" 4X4 overlanders think they need!

moggy 1968 1 Jan 2011 18:42

maybe you should post this somewhere other than the 4 wheels forum then:welcome:

Unnecessary Tat

Well I’ve got a 4X4 and I also like to amuse myself by looking at all the tat that some people are convinced they really really need.
I once went on a trip with someone who had bolted that much junk onto his LR that it weighed 3.5 tonnes before he even loaded it up with fuel, water, food clothes etc. Of course he then had to have heavy duty suspension fitted………… which then allowed him to fit an even bigger winch/winch bumper

Having said that a bit of an unnecessary poke. I still like to go and look and dream even if I’ll never buy it:innocent:

overland show

Hi all,

The show is organised by the same guy who began the Indoor 4x4 show at Donington a few years ago.

It's the show's first year and will be fairly small scale, but as it's aimed at overlanders and not specifically L*nd R*vers, it could be interesting.

And it's only a fiver to get in...

Happy trails,

Jojo

mossproof 2 Jan 2011 16:20

Might be something of relevance to our one wheel drive brethren (plus 2w/d Ural outfit owners of course :innocent:)
Maybe some positive biker input would encourage widening the scope of exhibitors / remit of the show next time? Far rather be INclusive than EXclusive myself. Oh, and I've seen some bikers over the years laden with expensive looking tat too, so it's not just a 4x4 thing :rolleyes2:
Maybe this is why he's known as "Lonesome"?

moggy 1968 2 Jan 2011 17:24

'Oh, and I've seen some bikers over the years laden with expensive looking tat too, so it's not just a 4x4 thing'

long way round anyone:oops2:

Sorry - :oops2:doh

humble pie can start to taste good after a while, take it from someone who's eaten plenty beer!

Griffdowg 7 Jan 2011 17:22

while its great that there is an 4x4 overland travel show, Its mostly the same commercial tours/suppliers and odments that come with Land Rover shows. I cannot see anything new coming out of this.

Now the Adventure travel show in London, with its talks etc. COMBINED with some hardware might be the way to go, it would certainly make me more interested. Im swaying more toward the London show (Im in Bristol so almost equidistant!) but will likley venture to the abenteuer-allrad show and maybe the RGS one up north end of May.

who knows.

rclafton 7 Jan 2011 18:01

i'll probabily take a wander as its pretty local to me

Don't exactly need to buy anything but like you say its always entertaining, anyway probabily no one is selling things to fit an iveco unless theres a reasonably priced wheel builder there

I'll be heading up to Sams RGS meet in May - was great last year but still a little landrover/toyota centric , would be nice to see both bikes and bigger trucks covered more

Chris S 15 Jan 2011 19:18

I'm going to give the indoor one a try, but aren't holding much hope of it being much different to the ordinary indoor one.

Quite fancying the one in London but it's a fair trek down so will have to see what happens.

RGS - for sure. it's only a few minutes from my house and it's gotten bigger each time

A&A - hopefully :thumbup1:

moggy 1968 15 Jan 2011 22:29

have you got any info on RGS?

Peter Girling 16 Jan 2011 00:27

When:- 28&29 May
Where:- Terrington School, York,YO60 6PR

Happy trails,

Jojo

Whilst it's true there won't be seminars and talks, because the Trade Stands are low cost you are more likely to find 'small traders' there. Exactly the same as the Motor Show, the most interesting stands are not the bling manufacturer's stands on the ground floor, they are the little un's on the first floor which are far better.

Also, for me the bloke's got it right from the off - only £5 adult entry - and these days with the horrendous price of fuel, low entry is very welcome. Fair play!!! Doubtless seminars and the like will come in due course. Little acorns an' all that.

Lonesome George 10 Feb 2011 15:52

I'm going on Sunday. Will report back on what I find.

Lonesome - you'd better update your location or have you got a very long drive / ride to get to the show
:oops2:

Found I can't make it as got family commitments that day

zeroland 10 Feb 2011 20:01

Meeting up...

Should we look to establish a meeting point on Sunday so that we can introduce ourselves?

I will be lurking around the various stands looking for bits and bobs...

mattsavage 10 Feb 2011 21:09

I'll be on the Matt Savage stand drinking coffee!

Makes a change from beer. Me, I never drink at shows! :innocent:

As it happens it will be a dry show being only one day. Sure we'll make up for it at all the others. See you there Matt.

And just in case others are still wondering about going, let me repeat what I said before about this event. It's cheap entry (£5 adult admission is more like it), it's going to be varied (yes the big players will be there, but there will also be plenty of small guys), and as it's the first show of it's type I feel it deserves supporting.

I'll be there on a joint stand - D3 - wearing several hats - Landy Rally Euro 4x4 Charity Drive, Pyrenees 4x4 Tours, 4x4 Overland Forum, Macks 4x4 info, 4x4Calendar ... and CONVOY for HEROES (in aid of Help For Heroes, an attempt to break the world record for the Largest Land Rover Parade at Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon over Easter weekend). That's all!!! :eek3:

Show report...

I popped over to the show yesterday. The venue was packed with all the traders - plenty showcasing vehicles and adventure trailers.

Overall I think it was worth the people aspect more than the buying opportunity - good to catch up with old friends and the various traders.

Hopefully the traders felt it was worthwhile...

Few photos from the day:

good show old bean

Yes, we had a good show. About time too, we did quite a few shows last year and none of them were much good for us.

Cheers,
Matt

Lonesome George 14 Feb 2011 15:13

I popped along on Sunday and have to say it was OK. I'm coming at this from the two wheel view point so it was never going to be as good as the NEC bike show for me. I was on the look out for a few things (Tent, cooker, etc) and was a little disappointed. There was only one stall selling camping stuff and it was (understandably) all big stuff - no good for a biker really.

Have to say, I'm really glad I already have all I need for a trip. Walking around all the options reminded me how hard it is when you are the start of organsing a trip. There is SO MUCH to buy and so MANY options.

moggy 1968 14 Feb 2011 20:33

gutted I couldn't make it, had to work. looking forward to next year as this looked good. long overdue in this country

Podcast

I took time to interview a few of the traders... here is a link to the podcast...
Overland Live - The Blog about Overland Expedition & Adventure Travel

The website also has a link to the live webcast series I have been doing. The next one is this Sunday evening featuring the owner of the ZA Overland Forum. Hennie will be sharing about his passion for overland travel.

Tom Mc 24 Apr 2012 17:30

Just trawling though some old posts and came across this one. Not certain if this show will be taking place February 2013, but in the meantime there is always the Adventure Overland Show

Don't forget, it's free entry to all overland vehicles/campervans/trucks over 3.5 tonnes as display vehicles, so inform any owners you may know. The Who's Attending section of the website is interesting as is the Display Vehicles section.

Tom Mc 30 Aug 2012 18:15

Just to let you all know, David Round who ran the travel show at Warwickshire Exhibition Centre 2011 is not running it in 2013.

Instead he has announced a new event - Donington 4x4 Show to be held 17th February 2013 - www.donington4x4show.co.uk

Tom Mc 30 Aug 2012 18:21

In case of any confusion, I suppose I should add:

ADVENTURE OVERLAND ... the national 4x4, bike & trekking travel show is taking place 6-7 October 2012 at Whilton Mill Karting Centre, nr Daventry, Northants, NN11 2NH

The seminars in particular are looking good what with Chris Scott, Lois Pryce and Austin Vince all giving talks - www.adventureoverlandshow.com/#/seminars/4566635376 :thumbup1:

Anybody else planning going to the October one. Thought I might go as looks like there are a few people bringing bigger trucks that they are self building, might get some ideas.

Cheers Toby

rclafton 9 Sep 2012 13:27

We will be there - Mr Tom has kindly given free passes for larger vehicles if you are willing to park in the display area and talk to folks etc.

And its only down the road - we deserve a shorter drive after willys treffen

gren_t 9 Sep 2012 23:54

I'll be there, turned out to be a nice fill in for the cancelled RGS event.

regards all

I've booked a stand there - it's our first show so should be interesting!

If any of you are passing by do drop in to say hello, it would be good to put some faces to names.

It’s all systems go for ADVENTURE OVERLAND this coming weekend – www.adventureoverland.com

Trades stands are completely full up (have been for nearly a month), loads of display vehicles, there’s a full programme of seminars/talks/lectures with some top people giving up their time, the bushcraft demo area has been set up, there’s even a floodlit 2-hr enduro kart race scheduled for the Saturday night – looking good!

Just remember to offer up a prayer to the rain gods to stay away for a change! :Beach:

Camping ‘pay on the day’ still available although filling fast, plus of course day admission 10:00 – 17:00 Sat, 10:00 – 16:00 Sun. £10 adults, children under 16 yrs free.

Me, I’m off to site to start setting up, so see you all this coming weekend … it’s going to be a good ’un!

Tom Mc 11 Oct 2012 01:23

Thanks for the prayers, we had two days of glorious sunshine. Must be a record for this summer! :thumbup1:

Harry m 11 Oct 2012 17:53

We were there at the weekend had a great time best show we have attended this year looking forward to next year ,really good format enjoyed the seminars and meeting like minded people bier

Tom Mc 14 Oct 2012 02:54

Glad you enjoyed it Harry, we aim to please! As it happens I liked it myself. Those expedition trucks are awesome, so to get together so many in one place at one time was amazing.

It was also good to put a load of faces to names - Rich and Julian being just two. All in all a great weekend (although I say so myself), thanks to all who supported it. :thumbup1:

It was a great weekend. A bit wet and cold camping on Friday night but superb weather on Saturday and Sunday. Loads of trade stands and excellent talks. Good to see some very innovative alternatives to 2 wheels and small 3 and 4 wheel vehicles even if I've not been won over by them.

Bigchaser 15 Oct 2012 01:01

Anybody have anymore photos to post of the show?

Harry m 15 Oct 2012 17:36

You'll find more photos here Home - Adventure Overland 2012 - Est. that's if the link works.

Bigchaser 15 Oct 2012 23:31

Thanks Dude.

rclafton 16 Oct 2012 18:17

Congats to Tom for a great show, I have to say the highlights for us were the talks, really enjoyed Chris Scotts and of course Peter & Eileen Critchon are always worth there weight in gold

I also like the bushcraft stuff, a real change

The display vehicle area was also good - got to nose round a few vehicles and talk to owners, had lots of visitors at ours and managed to gather 5 Iveco Daily 4x4's in one place, thats got to be a record

I'll post up more photos soon

s.p.i.d.e.r 17 Oct 2012 21:01

Very good show, best one this year by far.:thumbup1:
Good that it was not full of the big wheeled mob that go to the main show.
Bush craft demo was great, kids love it. (so did I)
Hope for more next year.

Neil H 18 Oct 2012 13:47

Would have love to have got there this year, but alas were were and are still in Germany have our 4 x 4 built.

Great to see a gathering of like minded people, somewhere to camp too.

We have been to Allrad at Bad Kissingen twice and its fantastic to see all the vehicles at the camp ground.

We have also been to Willys treffen, very friendly and lots to see and a much better location this year at Bad Kreusenach, Germany.

We should be returning with the truck in November, sometime.

We have done the Adventure travel show up in London a couple of times, I thought this years one wasnt as good as last years, but maybe because the big 4 x 4 trucks arent represented.

The guy thats building our water tanks in Germany, frank from FT design Tanks had a stand at the overland show, havent spoke to him since he got back to Germany, but will do.

If anyone wants tanks built although in Germany the prices and designs are good.

rclafton 18 Oct 2012 20:59

Hi neil

Think we met briefly at Willys Treffen this year

Look forward to seeing photos of your truck

It was a unique event in the UK, hopefully the Hubb event next year can capture some of that spirit and I think that Tom is planning to run again next year

Rich
