Hi
Doing same trip in June 2011 via Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, OZ in a Toyota 78 series. It is a ex hire vehicle (Kea Conquerer) from Cairns. Happy to share some thoughts but we don't have all the answers yet. I'm a new user so cant send a personal message. May be best to talk on the phone. I'm in Devon.
Cheers

Most definitely not...in remote areas, you are more likely to come accross trucks than cars...trucks use diesel, truck drivers generally know more about diesel engine and more likely to be able to help out on a diesel engine than petrol...

DIESEL ALL THE WAY!!! You can get away with running on absolute crap diesel, but not so much on crap petrol. Just make sure you use something like a RACOR fuel filter setup (or something similar - one that has the capability to seperate water in diesel)

Hi Steff,

Like everyone else, if we can help, let us know.

We are currently transiting China - very beautiful and well worth the effort from our experiences so far. We're using an alternative company listed to that of Mart456. Will be interesting to see how the costs, route & experiences stack up for future reference. Costs will depend on your route and duration planned through China. We have listed some info via our website but will provide a more up-to-date report shortly plus the agency we used once we have completed this leg of our transit.

Agree with comments so far re: vehicle a) diesel - economy and due to being widely available through our route so far, and b) a fridge c) don't over-spec d) all-in-one vehicle you can sleep on or in.

e) Re: China - consider sharing the costs of the guide through China if you can & feasible for you.

If you are considering entering China from Mongolia - a minimum 3 months notice is required for this border crossing to submit & get paperwork sorted etc. Each China border works differently and in many cases we have found, so does each agency. The agency you choose will advise you of the necessary paperwork prep. required - and can vary. Beware any huge border deposits up front - a good reputable agency should not request and provide this on your behalf due to already having a good relationship with the government officials or border concerned. If you need any help re: Mongolia (we did about 36 nights) and Kazahkstan (only about 12 nights though 2nd LR now accompanying us did 30 nights), just shout.

Tacr2man, Griffdowg and CornishDeity - big hellos & sloppy kisses from all of us XXXX

Hi guys...we met you at Ollies place in Southampton...glad to see all is going well.

Stefanie - you can check our site too (in my signature) for info on all those places. We did the trip in reverse and then carried on down Africa.

I would avoid Singapore - I've heard it's expensive to get car/motorbikes through there...not sure if its just all hearsay...

Hi Stephanie,

check out the following site;

The Africa Overland Network - Independent Overland Travel across Africa, Asia, the Americas and the World.

The name is misleading as it covers the whole world with loads and loads of overlanders websites and stories, now and in the past. Very useful for preparations as well as asking specific questions on this forum, you may run in to while preparing.
:thumbup1:
Enjoy,

Noel
