Buying a car in Sth America and crossing borders
Hello all,
Originally I have been on the forums looking at heading on a 2-3year motorbike trip around the world. But a lovely lady and a change of scenery have altered those plans. Now I'm living in Peru, working as a volunteer and hoping to buy a VW Beetle to drive around South America. Having owned a few 4wd's I know the choice of vehicle is... suboptimal, but it'll be done to raise money for charity and the beetle suits this. My main issue is buying a car in Peru and then crossing borders. It's my understanding that buying a car in Peru is pretty straight forward, I've found the required steps for that fairly easily. But I've read a few forums and blogs warning people that a foreigner buying a car in Peru can run into drastic roadblocks when crossing borders. If anyone has first hand experience in this is would be greatly appreciated. We have a few months still to find, the car, modify it, get the paperwork in order and possibly sacrifice a llama to the travel gods. Cheers all! |
why would you have problems with the peruvian car? I bought one , a long time ago though (1993) and travelled through SA without any problems, only problem was to leave Peru (had to leave a deposit) but this is not necessary any longer. Nowadays we travel with a brazilian registered car and I find this easier still than when i travelled with a european registred bike and car.

Don't know about Peru, but info was that a foreigner buying an Argentinian car can't take it out of Argentina - so your caution might be justified and certainly worth checking for Peru.
