Carnet needed for Nigeria or Ghana?
 

Hi, I know this has been covered many times but I cant find anything really up to date and dont trust what embassies say.

We are leaving for a trip ending in Nigeria, starting around mid November 2005.

It looks like the carnet will end up costing around £800 so buying passes on the borders would still work out much cheaper.

I am pretty sure we dont need a carnet for anywhere on route either to enter those countries or to get a visa. EXCEPT I dont know what the latest word is for Nigeria or Ghana.

You need a carnet for Ghana. You don't come in the country without a carnet. I was there in februari. I don't know if you need one for Nigeria. I think you do.

You Can enter Nigeria without a carnet . Its a bit more tricky (specially when applitying for the visa) but definitely doable.


Ghanna is the difficult one. Its heard from time to time that some people make it into Ghana without a carnet .. but the general wisdom is that you can not.
However there's the possibility of surrendering a certain ammount of cash (equivalent to the full vehicle's duty in Ghanna) at the Douanne office and *apparently* you get that money back upon re-exportation of the vehicle .

As I want to drive to Ghana with my Renault5 from 1989, I wonder what the duty to pay will be for Ghana? Anybody a rough idea?

Or, maybe I won't make it that far. Its a very good car though! So I am pretty confident.

I might as well get the carnet for the whole of west Africa then as it costs no more than just one for Ghana. If I wasn't going to Nigeria it would be 150% of the value of the car but for Nigeria its 200%. SO I'll have to pay a premium of £1000 for a car valued at £5000. I then get 50% of that back when I reach the UK with the car. Then there's the admin fees...

According to the ADAC website the Carnet fee is 250 euros.

That doesn't seem too bad (seemingly cheaper than Mr. Carnet even), but does anyone have any experience with doing a bank guarantee for the value?

The ADAC website says the guarantee for a vehicle worth less than 15000 euros is only 1500 euros.

If I get my UK bank to guarantee that I have 1500 euros in my account, I won't actually have to pay it, right? (assuming I either bring the vehicle back or it gets stolen)

I find the whole bank guarantee aspect of the Carnet rather confusing.

It was possible to get into Ghana without a Carnet in Feb 2004 (UK Defender 90)- with a bit of effort - they are a bit fussier with RHD vehicles, my friend had no problem in a LHD TLC with no Carnet.
Though they may well have tightened up on things since then.
