Foot passage on Container vessels
 

Does anyone know if it is possible to goin foot passage on freight vessels? I have heard that it is but after extensive google searching have found few leads.
Has anyone done this, have any companies they can recomend?
I will be travelling from the UK to Morocco with a 4x4 this summer and am looking for a fun / cheap way to get there without having to pound 1500 miles of french / spanish autoroutes in my diesel S3!

Its certainly possible to travel on some container ships, there are even books written about how to do it. However the two major limitations are there aren't that many ships that are prepared to do it these days, in part due to regulations such as over a small number of passengers (say 10 for example, not sure on the exact figure), they have to have a doctor on board, other facilities, etc.

The other far more significant factor is its now a somewhat exotic way to travel and hence its priced accordingly. The days of hopping on tramp steamers around the world have gone. Additionally it will be a further challenge to link up a ship that can take your vehicle in a container with one that is prepared to take passengers.

Hope it works out and you find something but suspect it might not be possible for a cheap price.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Plymouth/Bilbao or Portsmouth/Santander ferries took cars?
At least that way you could cut out the French bit.
If you have the time I would think that there would be some wicked B roads from there to the south of Spain.

But unless you are going for a significant amount of time the time you would waste going thru a freight port could be massive. Better to take the ferry to Bilbao or santander and then bite the bullet and drive the length of spain

We did it last year in a 101 and a 110 2.5 diesel which is as slow as a series iii - it isn't that bad
