Planning short trip

Hi all,

I have been backpacking for the last 10 years or so.
Last year I finally bought a camper van (only 2wd)

Now I am planning a trip in September or October for 4 weeks to somewhere awesome, but the question is where to?

I don't really want to go somewhere rainy and cold or stay in expensive western Europe.

I was thinking about either morocco or maybe Iran, but I am not quite sure if 4 weeks will be enough to drive there and have a time to enjoy and the country.

Thanks for your help

Where have you been in your 10 years on the road? Bet you've got some stories!

I went a 3 times to India and Nepal, traveled from Athens via the middle east and Cairo to Zanzibar overland by public transport. have been to mexico and Guatemala and went to south east asia a couple of times.

ohh and the usual western european countries like spain, portugal, france, italy scandinavian countries and a few more.

Yea it was an awesome experience, I went last year for a couple of month to spain and portugal in my van which i loved. Gave me so much more freedom than relying on public transport.

Anyone an idea if 4 weeks will be enough for Morocco or Iran?

I was in Ukraine in Sept 13, weather wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't wet or cold. Most of central/Eastern Europe will be like that in Sept, early Oct. Obviously colder in mountains.

Why not visit Romania and Western Ukraine, lots to see, lots of it, particularly Ukraine unspoilt by the EU yet.

Uk to Romania takes 2/3 days to drive, depending on how long you are prepared to drive in a day.

I'd say you could have a pretty nice time in 4 weeks touring Morocco. Iran is a massive country with many interesting places, I'm sure you could see a lot in 4 weeks but there would be more left to do.

Winter in the North of Iran is pretty cold so just keep that in mind.

4 weeks is fine for Morocco. Ferry to Spain, drive across, Ferry to Africa. Allow 1 week to/from and then 3 weeks in country.

Morocco is a great 1st introduction to vehicle based travel. Its well mapped, there are a lot of people there to help and your only just outside Mainland Europe. Few paperwork hassles and it is cheap to be there.

Sept-Oct is perfect. Nice and warm down south or in the interior. Bit cooler in the mountains.

Dont miss: Chefchauen, High Atlas, Fez Medina/Tannnery, The desert tracks and the Atlantic coast. Some good spots down near Assa and Tata.

Thanks a lot.

Ukraine sounds amazing, but judging the current political situation I'd rather wait for a more peaceful time.

Its hard for me to judge distances when it comes to driving somewhere. but its sounds like my next trip goes to morocco.

Just one more question, do I need off road tyres?? I am not planning to go off road, but how good are the roads in morocco?

Currently I have just normal van tyres.

Normal tyres are fine..the roads are better than in Italy i think..Maroc is easy and cheap. Two of the right words when travelling... Go and enjoy.
