Where can I get Tom Shepard's book Vehicle Dependant Expeditions
 

Hello all,

This book appears to be the bible for planning an overland trip, and yet I cannot find it anywhere apart from on amazon 'New and Used' for a hundred pounds.

If this is the fair price can any one tell me is it worth that?

I recently picked this up [1998 edition] at a college book sale here in Sharjah. I didn't know I was getting such a bargain. If you are going to Lumb Farm I'd be happy to bring it along so you can peruse it at your leisure over the 3 days and decide if it's worth the high price. I'm not looking to sell it though.

PS I've just noticed my copy cost 179 dirhams which is about 26 pounds. I'll see if it's still on sale here in the UAE.

Thanks for the kind offer. I'm not going to Lumb farm, mainly because I don't know what it is! I've only been reading this forum for about a month or so, and so aren't up with the finer details .......

I got mine from the Royal Geographical Society in London. they had them on the shelf (this was a few years back now though)

Just keep an eye on eBay , that's where I got mine for a bargain price .

I'm afraid it's a different publication, Vehicle Dependant Expeditions instead of Desert Expeditions, which you can find downloadable on the internet as a .pdf file (86 pages).

I have one, and a new 14 year old 200tdi 110! And lots of other toys!

Its like all my christmases rolled into one :)

A 14 yr old landy AND vehicle dependant etc, etc... Eish! You are a sucker for punishment!

Years ago I bought that book (plus a copy of his desert expeditions pdf) and although good in general I found them outdated and overly complicated. I much prefer Chris' book as it deals more with the practicalities of individual overlanding rather than planning a full on scientific expedition.

Anyway, good luck with the Landy!

No, didn't win ebay ..... got about bid for it. But ended up getting it with the landy and tonnes of other stuff too. I'm a happy man. Still have loads of time before we set of (2 years +) but now have a purpose and a tool for that purpose. First two trips already lined up. A quick visit to my folks in Cornwall, then 10 days in Ireland.

Hi chaps bought mine via RGS for £40 delivered
Expedition Logistic manuals

this is revision 2.1, if anyone spots a copy of the first edition grab it as it has become an expensive collectable.
I always request a search when i am in hay on Wye just in case anyone has a copy knocking about.

Ahh thanks guys, so why is it so expensive on Amazon ?, is it because its a 1st Ed ?

If so is there much of a difference between them ? (so many questions !)

The edition i have (2.1) is the most up to date, however it has become a must have book in the adventure/overland fraternity, the 1st edition is sought after as are the 1st's in almost anything else of perceived value.

for practicallity sake I would want the most up to date information available, however i still want the 1st Ed.

The copy i looked at on amazon looks like the 1st ed. hence price

I also have Tom's book "Quiet for a Tuesday", an excellent read with great photography

Now why did I not think of that? I second writing Tom himself; very nice guy and I had my copy in no time.

Why not buy all Tom's books direct from the man himself. I can't believe some of the prices these books are going for.
