3rd party insurance in OZ
Just got the bike out of customs in Darwin. The customs guys informed me that I needed to go to the MVR and have the bike checked and buy 3rd party insurance. Bike checked no probs. When it came to sorting out the insurance the MVR informed me that the minimun policy they could give me was for 1 month and once we left the state it was invalid. I dont want to have to go to the MVR on entering every state, can anyone suggest anywhere where I can buy 3rd party insurance that will cover me OZ wide. We will be here for 5 months.

As i remember, you actually get 3rd party insurance with an Australian state driving licence, and as long as your not resident in any other one state for longer than 3 months (i think, but they wouldnt be able to check anyway!) it is valid in all states. The licence was easy to get, just show your uk licence and take a written test, it arrived a week later. Best of luck. WP

The third party that the people in darwin are talking about is normally paid when you register a vehicle in Australia and is a compulsory part of the registration payment. And yes, it is a state thing. However, a vehicle that is registerd in one state, say NSW, is covered anywhere in Australia.
Can you imagine the hassles if that were not so. . . especially as some towns actually straddle state borders. There are a lot of companies that offer the cover so perhaps you should get onto the internet. The NRMA in NSW is one company that is worth trying. Try them on www.nrma.com but make sure they do not think you want 3rd party property insurance. That cover the other vehicle that you hit or damage. The other 3rd party covers people that you hit. . . And you thought India was confusing. . . |
