Australian Carnet de Passage
 

Does anyone know who issues the carnets in Australia??? I will be trying to get one in either Darwin or Sydney.

Any idea of the costs involved???

Read this article re costs on the AAA site. I've been speaking to someone about geeting one in NSW, and the woman reckons about 2-3 weeks to issue.

It is valid for 12 months, but you can extend it while on the road. The option is to extend for 3 months and then again for a final 12 months, or to extend for 12 months the first time.

The only thing I'm not sure about yet, is how it will work with the road tax (rego). From my understanding, the carnet is only valid if your car is registered here in Oz, which means you need to have paid your rego for the year. This seems pretty stupid though seeing that you won't (in my case) be using the car in Oz while the rego is valid. this also means (in NSW) that you have to have the green slip insurance. All of this is spending money on nothing basically.:confused1::confused1: I'm not sure if I misunderstood the person I spoke to originally. I will still speak to someone at the RTA about it though.

Perhaps someone has gone through the process recently who will be able to give more accurate info re this...

Does anyone know where to download the application form for a Carnet from NRMA. The above link doesn't seem to have anything related to Carnet. I have an old PDF but I really wanted to check if the application form had changed at all.

Just had a look on the NRMA site and can't find a link either.

She's the person who sorts out carnets there, I've always found her good to deal with.

Are you in Australia and will depart with a need for a carnet or arriving in Australia with a need for a carnet to visit Australia? Two different answers.

Given Tim's post was 3.5 years ago I suspect he's discovered the answer by now Roger. :cool4:

Turbocharger, both NRMA and RACV (the two largest state motoring organisations) point to the pdf form at http://www.aant.com.au/Portals/0/pdf...pplication.pdf , which I'm sure you have already found. I doubt very much if each state motoring organisation has created an online application, given the relatively small of carnets issued each year.

Cheers Gary!! That's what I was after. Looks like it hasn't changed. Really was just checking if there was going to be any advantage in getting my Carnet in Oz over here in Europe... The main advantage is the insurance indemnity. In Europe it doesn't exist, they all want a 20k-30k deposit for Egypt which is utterly ridiculous.

Duh!!!! first rule of posting - look at the date.

+1 for the insurance indemnity and also the lower premium for Egypt (UK 800% vs Aus 200% - how does that work???). Aus carnet is def the way to go.

Can you purchase a carnet in Australia for a bike purchased out of Australia
or does it have to be purchased in the country it is registered in?

I'm not sure if the AAA will do it but it's worth asking. The rules are different for each country.

I met a German guy who bought a bike in Uganda (Ugandan registered) and rode it back to Germany on a German carnet.

I also met Kiwis in a UK registered vehicle who tried to get a NZ carnet but couldn't and had to get an expensive UK carnet instead.

The AAA can't issue the Carnet directly to individuals because it's only motoring clubs that do this because it's a member service...
