Best time to Ride Australia
 

Coming back for a visit in 2018 and would like to Explore more of Australia and was thinking of doing a Lap ! what time of year do you all recommend ? My start of point will be Adelaide as I have some family there and a motorcycle :)
I was thinking maybe Sept/Oct time and going anti clockwise, just looking for thoughts and advice here,
Would be good to meet up with some adv riders on the road

I did a loop starting in Sydney in early September, north to Townsville, then west / south through the interior to Alice Springs and Uluru, and then back along the south coast, ending back in Sydney after about 4 weeks and 10,000 KM.

The weather then was ideal for riding most of the trip: sunny and pleasant on the east coast, in the interior nights just above freezing and days of 25 centigrade, and mostly decent along the south coast in late September. I did run into about 2 days of heavy rain right around Melbourne-Philips Island, and rented a small caravan in a park for a couple of days to get out of the rain.

A good time of the year to do it. Warm and pretty humid across the top end eg: Broome to Darwin to Cairns but not hard on you as a rider and not too harsh on bike. As said, the desert areas at night you need to rug up it gets cold.
I did the a journey in 2011 commencing in July to Sept, from NSW east coast. From the latitude of Alice Springs south the weather was miserable and cold in the remote areas, it did not warm up till Alice. After that it was just great in Sept in WA & certainly across the bottom Bight area. A month can make a big difference in weather but your chosen time should be pretty good

Delayed entry. I’m doing the big lap around Australia now. Doing it in an SUV due to the heat. Started in Melbourne. Drove up to Cairns. Then over to Alice Springs and Uluru. Up to Darwin. Over to Broome. Am heading down to Perth now. Will then head back to Melbourne via Adelaide. Hope to fit in Tasmania before flying to Hong Kong. Beautiful country and vast. But I would not recommend this time of year for traveling in Australia. Too hot!

I did a loop around the south and north islands of New Zealand in Nov-Dec. Drop dead gorgeous country. Great roads for driving/riding. Highly recommended.

I was considering doing a lap of Australia for about two months in April & May of 2020 by motorcycle. Is this a good time to go? Or bad time? It seems like the temperatures will be moderate, but I might hit a little more rain than say in September/October. Would appreciate any advice!

Dear Starstruck, I did a lap April/May/June/July on an A/T this year, 30,000kms.
Two months isn't long enough to do it in comfort and still hope to see anything, in my opinion. I would lower my sights and do less than a full lap or get more time somehow. However, its your call.
I experienced rain on the coasts, sub-zero temps in the desert, high 30's in the north. You will get all the seasons in one day at times.
I stayed off Highway 1 and other major highways whenever possible, free camping approx 75% of the time.

I went December to March. perfect time for me

A lap in two months! You'll be doing nothing but riding. We went as follows:

Brisbane-Sydney-Adelaide-Perth-Broome-Darwin-Alice Springs-Uluru-Coober Pedy-Birdsville-Normanton-Cairns-Brisbane-Melbourne-Tasmania-Brisbane. Obviously this is just key points - there were lots of national parks, small towns, etc., etc. This took us 9 months, and we had already spent most of a month in Queensland.

We planned the trip around the following:

- the Red Centre in winter (too hot in summer, and some areas are closed for this reason)
- Victoria and Tasmania in Summer (cold and less pleasant in winter)
- Adelaide and Perth in autumn (not too hot, not too cold, although we did run into a polar cold front)
- Pilbara, Kimberley, Kakadu NOT in "the wet" (although we'd like to return to experience the wildlife in wet season some time).
- Northern Queensland NOT in "the wet" either.

So, we ended up as follows:

We arrived in Brisbane at the beginning of March. Left Brisbane at the end of March; to Sydney then west into Outback NSW, then SA, Kangaroo Island, and to Adelaide in April ; SA and then Nullarbor to Southern WA and Perth in May; north to Kalbarri, Ningaloo, Karijini, Broome, Gibb River Road in June;
Darwin, Kakadu in July; Alice Springs, King's Canyon, Uluru, Coober Pedy, Simpson Desert, Birdsville, Normanton in August; then through Northern Queensland to Daintree, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, and Carnarvon Gorge in September; then back to Brisbane (so a lap in 7 months or so), then to Sydney, Thredbo, Melbourne, Great Ocean Road in October; then Tasmania, Canberra, and back to Brisbane in November. We left Australia in mid-December.

This worked well in terms of putting us in the north when it was cooler and drier, in the centre in mid-winter, and in the south when it was warmest.

PS - anti-clockwise is shorter.

Best time to ride Australia? During a pandemic! The rest of the world hasn’t got a handle on the virus, Australia? Yep! As of today, a year in, we haven’t even had 30,000 cases in total, & a good amount of them are people returning in quarantine

True, but the challenge lies in figuring out how to get into the country - I think that at present, it's locked up tighter than a pig's ass in fly season.
