I am planning a trip from Cairns as far North as I can go. I read on this site where a traveller rented a bike and drove up solo ( no tour group). I wanted to know if anybody can recommend a rental shop and if anybody has any info on such a trip. Thanks.

Here's a site for you to try. They are a tour company, but maybe they can help you rent a bike from somewhere in Cairns.

I've done the trip twice now and will be glad to help out. Have a look at a few photo's from my last trip. I stuffed up the scanning so they take a fair while to display.
