Kiwi riders wanting to show their backroads?
Hi fellow riders,
I'm a german guy travelling NZ with my girlfriend with a campervan. I would love to meet some like-minded people that might be willing to share their local knowledge and have a chat and a beer about their adventures, old bikes, worksoph-talk, whatever similar. Unfortunately we just have a 2WD camper, so our backroad abilities are limited. However I have my riding gear with me, so if anyone might be even having a second bike - I'm happy to ride with you for a short trip and of course pay for all your efforts! Here is something I did back in the alps: https://vimeo.com/249307583 We are now on the nort island and probably spending the next 2-3 weeks here and then heading to the south island. You can also send me a text/whatsapp under: 0210 281 0914 Cheers Max |
You'll be limited on what back roads you can travel with a campervan. The Rainbow Rd, Hakataramea Valley Rd and Danseys Pass (all on the South Island) are all passable in a camper although if it's a hired camper you better check if insurance covers you for this. Other than that best to hire two wheels and go exploring.

I've just been through Rainbow Road on a guided tour, and definitely wouldn't recommend it in a 2WD campervan. It's not officially open yet, but should be open by December 1. Best to check first, though. Toll is $40 for a 4-wheel vehicle.
It's a few years since I went through Danseys Pass, but at that time there was nothing that should discourage a campervan from going through. I'd stay off Hakataramea Valley Rd in a 2WD campervan, though. |
