New Zealand: Maps & POI for Garmin 278?

were going to NZ in March and i am still searching a map for my garmin 278. (don´t have a smartphone)
Do you have any experience with free maps like Open Street maps?
Its not easy for me to test the maps in advance, because i am living in germany.

Are one these maps running well? (routable?)

POI:
Are there some POIs available for free campsites or just simple campsites?
(we don´t need a campsite with a pool or tennis court for the night *g*)
Were are travelling by a camper.(self contained)

If you also have a recommendation for staying 2 nights in christchurch or auckland, please let me know. (motel, camping park).
We need a bed to get rid of the jet leg.

Hi Mate, the NZ open GPS project maps should work & route ok.

The NZ Department of Conservation (DOC) website has campsite brochures that have many of the cheap/free public campsites listed.

Have a dig around on that site & a Google generally as I remember also seeing a POI list for NZ campsites somewhere but I'm not sure where.

The NZ Open GPS maps work well and are routable, and they also have poiints of interest taken from the Zenbu web site (Zenbu New Zealand. Find Everything.).

You can test the maps in advance on a computer if you have the Garmin Mapsource program installed. You can then try out autorouting, see what POIs are available, and check that you can download the map to your device. There are also topo maps available from the Open GPS site, but mostly not as good as the Garmin ones which seem to be taken from the LINZ topo maps.

Somewhere in the OpenGPS forums there is helpful information about installing Mapsource if you don't already have it installed. Assuming the last version is still available for download from garmin.com or elsewhere.

BTW the latest LINZ topo maps are available for free download in .tif format, but probably not easily transferable to your Garmin.

.tif format is a raster format .. the 278 only takes vector format. So no LINZ maps on the 278. :thumbdown: You may be able to put them on to your camera for viewing that way.. certainly on the PC at home and look at them there.

Motravel .. you can download a map for Germany from here and see what is is like locally ... Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap This may give you some confidence in the maps.

You can also get a New Zealand map for the same source. The other sources use the same data base but 'render' (draw with different colors, line thickness etc) it differently. There is also the variability of the data on the data base ... more people per kilometer in Germany compared to NZ means there may be less workers mapping stuff in NZ - so the map may have less. But the German map will give you an idea of roughly how the NZ map will be.

Jet lag... should not be too bad. I find it worst travelling the other way - from Oz/Nz to Europe.

Hmmmmm. How does it type backwards occasionally. Just on this forum. Anyway as I was saying, osm are great and the main thing missing is speed limits and pictorial lane guidance.

I use the openstreetmaps.nl here in S Island, they work fine, route fine, and have plenty of POIs including doc sites...
