Riding Sydney - London: Shipping from the UK

Hi there

I plan to ride from Sydney back to London, starting in January. I own a 2010 Triumph Bonneville.

The route is done often enough the other way round for Brit registered bikes, however I wanted to check whether anyone knew of any particular problems with shipping a nearly-new bike to Oz from the UK and then riding it around the country for a month?

Does anyone know of any particular requirements in terms of emissions etc, as I have aftermarket exhausts fitted.

Thanks in advance

Ed

Hi Ed
you will need a Carnet from the UK to import the bike into Australia, if the bike is road legal in the UK it should be alright to bring it in.
You will find all the info at The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development Homepage

I have done the trip from AUS to Europe what a great trip and you will need a Carnet for part of that too.

Good luck
Mark

Your exhaust will be the least of your concerns. I shipped my bike to Sydney in 2012 [botany bay] and made the mistake of at first not arranging an "agent" to sort out all the beaurocracy. AQIS [Ozzy quarantine] are on a par with any British gov. department for ineptitude. And charge a lot. Hope your trip starts off better mate, and don't ask about insurance outside NSW!

The vehicle has to be clean as new. Repeat: clean as new. Not only from the outside, but from inside as well. Even the tyres will need to be this way (well, actually they probably won´t look inside your tyres, but you get the point). Do NOT underestimate this requirement.

There was not so long ago a bus(!) from Finland(!) at the port in Darwin, but it was never let into the country no matter how much they tried to clean and clean it again. That group actually had to rent another bus for Oz.

And if you use a wooden crate, it has to be fumigated, and you will need the certificate for that. Then there´s the Oz roadworthiness inspection (but that one wasn´t tough at all, at least for me it took maybe 15 minutes). Quarantine inspection is likely the biggest stumbling block. Oh yeah, and you will need a carnet. Good luck!
