Temporary import of a Jeep into Australia
 

Looking for a bit of advice....... Most of my foreign forays are to Europe and North Africa. But I'm hoping to import my 2012 Jeep Wrangler into Australia next June for around a month. It not standard with 35" tyres and a 2.5" lift kit. Pretty mild by Jeep standards.....

Are the modifications likely to fall foul of any requirements?
What's needed paperwork wise for the temp import?

Unless things have changed recently you need a carnet to get into Oz. The vehicle needs to be fully road legal in it's home country. Enter in NSW & there are no tech inspections or other paperwork required, just customs & quarantine checks. Clean that jeep good! Quarantine inspections are thorough.

Steam clean so you can eat off it, including everywhere ... inside the cabin, air inlets, top of the gearbox, diffs etc etc. You don't want any dirt, plant material.. otherwise you are up for a steam clean in Oz under quarantine regs - so the waste water has to be treated. Not cheap. Some times they simply look at the outside and 'see' that it is clean, other times they really look.

New air filters too. Favourite is to run a finger along the underneath of ledges in engine compartment and if it comes out muddy ....

If you are entering in Queensland they have some other requirements so check that out - looks like you need an overseas vehicle (& LHD?) permit, see here: https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/reg...ster/overseas/

Oz is a PITA for temp imports as each state wants you to do something different, they don't get many foreign vehicles so it can be hard to find out exactly what you need to do.

While I am definitely all for people bringing their cars to my home country to explore, it's a bloody expensive place to visit with your own vehicle.

You might want to consider whether the cost of Carnet, Shipping and Customs is justified for such a relative short stay.

You are looking at something the region of 2000-3000GBP in costs to ship the car in, clear customs and then ship it out again. That pays for a lot of hire car. I don't know of anyone renting Wranglers, but finding a Land Cruiser to rent is not difficult.

Distances are also vast in Australia. A month of driving does not allow much time if you want to see the outback.

Brisbane has to be the worst place to bring in a foreign vehicle. Legally you are not allowed to drive it on the road until its had the full inspection and paid the fees. Goto Sydney and drive it out of the port. The time it takes to drive from Sydney to Brisbane will be offset in the week stuffing around getting sorted in QLD.
