Tips for Tasmania?
Hi all
cruisin' to Tasmania with a mate in a couple weeks. Any one have any advice/tips/suggusted routes to take? Thanks J |
When you arive - if fine weather do the west coast while you have good weather, if bad weather do the east coast - the east coast is 'shealtered' by the redst of the island so gets less rain etc.
Tassie is all good .. except that midlands hwy, and there hide there speed cameras. If you indend to do dirt .. be aware that the road signs say what road you're on .. not how far you are to x, y, z .. a gps can be usefull there.. |
Thanks Frank
Thanks Frank,
I dont know why but i had just assummed id head east then west. Thanks for the tip...sounds like it could turn out to be a good one |
I reckon just about every road is beautiful in Tassie except maybe for the Hwy from Launceston to Hobart. Do try the small secondary roads. Usually they're curvy and have little traffic. Very enjoyable. If you have some time left in the end, take the small road from Fingal to Launceston via the Ben Lomond NP. It's a bit of dirtroad, but very scenic. Combine it with a visit to the alpine village. Superb!
Next to the roads along the Westcoast, the road leading west from Hobart to the lakes. Absolutely stunning! Hans |
A must is a couple of laps up and down the twisty road into Queenstown. Watch out for the gravel on most left hand corners on secondary roads, this is thrown onto the road by the log trucks cutting the corners. Many fond memories of several laps of Tassie.

Agree that the highway from Launceston to Hobart is not the most scenic in the state, but it does pass through or near towns with some significant colonial architecture.
If you take this road, make a point of stopping off at Ross, and in particular check out the old stone bridge. |
take a tent
there a loads of great places to camp in tasmania, so would strongly advise a tent and a good sleeping bag.
the west coast has some fantastic dirt roads to be ridden, make sure you sample the tassie beers, best tap beer in australia i think. bruny island down south is worth a visit. phil. |
Best in Aust
Just got back from a weeks riding in Tassie, the best riding in Aust. Great roads, great scenery and good friendly people. About the best ride is the trip to Strathgordon (gordon dam), beats kangaroo valley and the great ocean rd hands down. When you get to the end, spend a night at the Strathgordon village motel, it'll blow you away!

Hi Guys,
you all seem to have riding knowledge of Tasmania, i hope you dont mind if I pick your brains a bit... A few of us have planned to go riding in Tasmania for about 10 days from the 18th of December 2010 onwards. We are competent riders, and have done a two month, 18,000kms journey around Australia (The Hard Way Round). We plan to be riding WR 250's and 450's and be completely self sufficient - we are happy to camp. We have heard many comparisons between the East Coast and the West Coast, and we have been told by many to avoid the West Coast due to the rain and mud. Could you please give us some more information? If we have 10 days, what would be the best route? Looking forward to hearing from you - Jonny |
Hey mate,
I'm just finishing night shift but if I get a chance tonight I'll reply with some suggestions! But in case I don't, speed cameras are everywhere (hidden) and no matter where you point your bike you'll end up somewhere fun!!! |

Favourites are Elephants Pass, the twisties into Queenstown (worth a couple of laps at least), the road into Lake Leake (inland a bit) Rd famous for it’s high speed constant radius twisties. Pub at the Lake basic campground by the lake, Wielangta Road Forest Drive, Weldbrough free camping behind the pub if you buy drinks! Go and see this mob for a full day boat along the East Coast, the best money we spent Eaglehawk Neck Visitor Information Centre The Officers Mess 443 Pirates Bay Dve Eaglehawk Neck Eaglehawk Neck Backpackers 94 Old Jetty Rd Eaglehawk Neck TAS 7179 Telephone: (03) 6250 3248 Don't even think about wasting your money on seeing Dismal Swamp, was very disappointing This is just a few of the many beautiful places in Tassie, enjoy the trip Glen |
