Jan-Feb-March best time to tour NZ,normally the driest and warmest months not as hot as the Aussie outback 20-32 degrees c. lot rivers to stop and take a quick dip. Locals on hoilday from Christmas till middle of Jan so more Traffic (including motorcyclists) on highways and accomadation may need booking in advance this period.

I would strongly advise not to take any "quick dips" in rivers/streams that are above the 26th Parallel as there may be the odd encounter with a 'Flat Dog' (crocodiles), could definately ruin any thoughts blissfully lazing about by the rivers edge if you get my meaning.

Australian winter is the Dry season in the North.....but still warm which is why all those victorians head up to port douglas each year. South best in Summer.

Watch out for stingers in the North over summer/wet season..box jellyfish etc. Look at the water and think stingers and salties before you jump in.
