If you're not staying or riding more than two or three weeks, I heartily recommend http://motorent.nz. Rented from them twice, once in Christchurch for a loop of the South Island, once in Auckland for a loop of Coromandel and Cape Reinga. Very good experience both times, and they're one of the very few rental shops I've seen that will happily rent you a full set of textiles and boots (at a reasonable cost), not just a helmet and knee pads.
