yes they do fail!! Mine went at 35,000 miles (07) and cost a small fortune to repair, don't go to a BMW dealer as they will charge in the region of £1200,look around for an independent mechanic for a better deal unless you can do the job yourself. Check rear wheel for any movement when on main stand and this could give you an early warning of any problem waiting to happen.Plenty of info on various forums

Hi

Like everything parts fail. My R1200GSA 08 has just hit 340,000 ks and has had no issues with the final drive. Replace the FD oil every 10,000 ks.

The uni joints in the driveshaft can fail and mine did at 332,000. The only worry was that it went from okay to almost seized in 120k's. Rebuild cost me $500 but has grease nipples so can be serviced when you drop rear drive to drain the oil.

I wouldnt let it worry you.

cheers

Hi Barry, mine has just gone after 55k ('06 gsa from new) but i'm very guilty of not looking after the drive with respect to changing the oil regular. For what it costs i'd drop the oil for peace of mind. It's so easy to do and get the Molly out at same time get those splines done as well.

Cheers Mez

Are you new to this bike? Assuming your bike is currently OK? No
problems? So you're trying to learn about this issue and do preventative?

Or ... has your bike already lost it's final drive? You don't make any of this clear in your post.

As mentioned previous, lots you can do to keep it going. But final drive
failures are NOT RUMORS. There are THOUSANDS documented all over BMW forums on ALL Oil Head GS models (R1100, R1150 and R1200)

From my observations many final drive related breakdowns happen when bike is ridden loaded heavy riding ROUGH off road. Mechanic type travelers sometime carry spare parts on board to deal with certain bearing, shaft or U-joint failures.

For many, proper servicing can avoid common failures. Many many GS's over 100K miles with nothing broken. But a fair % also have had these issues ... and OTHER problems too!

But if hammered hard off road it's likely that eventually something will break.
These are not full dirt bikes but some owners treat them as such.
