'89GS/PD exhaust
Looks like one of the first things i'll need to replace on my new?? bike is the exhaust system. Any sugestions? How long does the stock usually last? What effect does bad gas have? Performance gains from aftermarket products, if any?? There's gotta be some exhaust pro's out there or maybe someone with a story to tell.
Thanx guys! |
Do you need to replace the entire system or just the collector box? My girlfriends 1994 GS was fine, stainless headers & tailpipe but the chromed mild steel collector box rusted through. I'd welded it in the past but not much left to weld now. I recently replaced the collector with an aftermarket stainless "Y" piece for about £100.00. Straight swap, very slight increase in noise, provides easier access to drain plugs etc.
Try Motorworks or Motobins in the UK if you want one. Steve |
Ron, I believe your bike should have a full stainless exhaust - except for the collector box, which rusts badly as Steve found. The headers may not be stainless, but I think they are. The muffler is definitely stainless.
For GS's, IF needed replace with stock stainless pipes, or Staintune (Australia) is also very good. In the UK, Keihan makes a very good stainless system. All are available via mail order. Probably cheapest from the UK, although for Vancouver, direct from Aus may be a good deal for Staintune. ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
Thanx for the help guys! Grant, do you have a favorite shop here in BC, or even in N.America? It appears most good mail-order places are overseas. I try to avoid crossing boarders if i can( no pun intended!)

There is no good Canadian mail-order for BMW that I know of.
Most people I know order from Motobins. Local CAN be reasonable, but it's usually over-priced. An order of some size from the UK usually works out much cheaper. One item, probably not worth the trouble unless it's a big one. ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
Thanx for all the help Grant and the rest of you. After X-mas, i'll be sure to make my contribution to this most necesary sight. A true lifesaver! On the other hand, are there any electronic pro's out there...

Electronics - what's the problem? Probably best to start a new thread...
