Airhead alternator
I've not seen on these pages another uprated alternator for 77-95 airheads. See www.euromotoelectrics.com for details. I like the idea that the rotor is a permanent magnet device so cannot burn out, doesn't suffer from the burnt out charging bulb problem, and there's no brushes. It would appear much more reliable by design. 29 amps seems good enough for me.
Anyone out there fitted one? |
Enduralast
Yes, I have one that I fitted on my RT last year to test. The idea was to check it out before I mounted it on my G/S. I did so earlier this year and have since started my RTW trip. I too was looking to replace the weak rotor/brushes/diode board etc. The thing has a ton of output, something like 400 or more Watt, but my main concern was robustness. See my write-up below. Ask questions if you have any.

Nope... but its on my list! John |
The 'falure' piont on these systems is the voltage regulator/rectifier. Smaller than a rotor to carry and lighter too.

airhead alternator
I have replaced on my '91 GS as follows-
1. the rotor (original went open circuit) 2. diode board (1 diode went open circuit - it doesn't charge) 3. dodgy brushes once 4. dirty slip rings 5. 2 blown charging bulbs (never noticed either until the battery went flat. The engine starts to mis-fire, RPM indications all over the place and it then dead cuts) When I save up, I'll get the permanent magnet type alternator. FYI, most big aircraft use permanent magnet generators (PMG's) as a final, ultimate, my God the battery's flat, power supply for the engine electronics. It's because they always work. |
