ECU reprogramming
 

I have a 2009 F650GS twin and following an attempted theft the ECU went into an EWS fault and it seemed the only solution was to replace the ECU. This served me well for a year but now the mismatch between the various components seems to be coming back to haunt me in terms of various faults. So my question is, has anyone had success getting an ECU reprogrammed?

You can do this at a BMW dealer. I've done it for people in the past at a main dealer. But I think you will struggle getting it done today as it can be quite complicated and most dealer tech today would class your bike as an antique.

And it will be expensive...

Thanks Ted. BMW in London has refused to work on the bike with the replacement ECU I installed last year so going back to the original with its EWS fault may be my only option. I guess I will have to see just how expensive this might be as it may well make the bike a write-off. Seems ridiculous seeing as it even has a nearly new engine in it now.. :(

You need to replace your BMSKP (EcU), with a ews ring (key reader by your ignition) that's been coded to it.

You need to find a full set. Maybe from a breaker.

James Sherlock or Motorworks may have sets.

But as you've found with main dealers, it's hard to find or that will program or fit second hand parts.

How did you do it first time around?

Yes I found a set with key etc. It was for an F800ST, which worked fine for a year but now it’s causing issues as it wants to see a secondary air valve that my bike doesn’t have and that is preventing my mechanic doing a diagnostic to fix a problem with my instruments which are intermittently losing power.

Replacing your ECU seems like a drastic solution to diagnosing a fault. It's probably your coils. Nearly always is.

I can’t quite remember now exactly why the finger was pointed at the ECU but the fact is that the replacement did make the fault go away. The thieves that caused all the trouble in the first place used a blowtorch on the ignition wiring (!) to get the bike to start and I was advised that this had probably shorted something out in the ECU

Unlikely. The ECU is just a switchbox really. Full of transisters that earth components.

You probably just needed a new ignition switch and EWS ring. Coded in with your original ECU at at dealer.

Yes I did replace the switch and ring antenna first but it didn’t make the EWS go away
